Maledictus Terra Book 3: Vetitum Nemus Part 35

Greetings All

I hope your week has been fantastic! Been really busy wrapping up my current project but enjoying the awesome customer!

Some history was reflected upon by @zakludick in his update that may have an impact in the future of our characters. Let's see how.

Sebastian had taught her a few techniques to calm the burning within her soul, but none of those seemed to work now. There was an urge to tear apart the orc and human man before her and she was slowly starting to lose herself. Just as the screaming was about to reach a fever pitch it was interrupted.

Rex tackled Robert to the ground while Mortis took Gorma to the ground. The two weapons that had lashed were now lying on the ground. The screaming was still there but it was muted now. Rex was screaming for Robert to calm down while Mortis seemed to be trying to calm the enraged orc.

Magna couldn’t tear her eyes from the weapons on the ground. She was drawn to the rapier. It was gaudy, not something that would be used to fight but rather be on display. It had her attention, and it was drawing her closer. She couldn’t help but step forward and reach for it.

The blow that followed knocked her down and made the air in her lungs explode from her mouth in a gasp. Derric in his wolf form had his teeth bared at her while his back leg quickly kicked the offending weapon aside. He yelped as if burned and jumped up to face the weapon as it came to rest in the dirt.

Magna, snapping out of the trance she had been in, quickly regained her senses, covered her ears, and yelled for her brother. Adrian didn’t need to be told twice. He had sensed the heat from his sister and knew that this blade was an artifact that interacted with her bond with the Flamed One.

Ripping the traveling cloak from his neck, he quickly muttered a spell and threw the material over the blade. It wrapped around the blade tightly by magical means and finally, the screaming stopped.

The group stared at each other stupidly as Adrian stepped forward to lift the blade. There was no sound except the heavy breathing of the people who had been fighting. Knowing that he needed to step up, as his sister was reeling from the shock, Adrian said softly.

“Gorma, I am sorry about your mother. We should have been more open about our allies. For now, we cannot be sure that Millmor was the ghoul king, I ask that you bury your anger for now. For now.”

He looked up as Mortis helped Gorma get to her feet. Within seconds her axe was back in her hand, but she seemed to be fighting back against heavy emotions. Millmor dusted himself off before picking up Rex and Robert using a hand each before turning to Gorma.

“For now.” He echoed, the promise clear.

Mortis then turned his attention to Magna and helped her to her feet as Derric was sitting back, licking at his back paw. Magna couldn’t tear her sight from the weapon her brother was carrying. She had heard a voice, a voice she knew well. It had always been around while they were growing up. It was always disapproving, more so than their father had ever been.

“Adrian…” she gasped as she clung to Mortis.

“I know.” He shuddered as he looked at the blade. “I heard it too.”

“But how?” she demanded.

Adrian looked at Robert who seemed to be barely standing, almost hyperventilating and hugging his arms to his body. Adrian was sure that if Millmor wasn’t holding onto him the man would be fighting the prince for the blade he now held. The spell on the material would only last so long, and after that, the sword's influence would be felt once more.

Unafraid, though he wasn’t sure where the bravery came from, Adrian stepped closer to touch the man once. Millmor had to grip him harder as he fell forward unconscious.

“There, we should be safe for now.” Adrian turned back to everyone. “I must see Adiran. These are bad signs.”

Noxus was impressed at how the prince had taken control of the entire situation and made a mental note to inform his mother. She was startled when Adrian gave her the blade and said, “Take this to Adiran, quickly. Don’t stop to talk to my mother, report to him first, then meet us in the throne room. I am sure we have a heck of a story to tell my mother.”

Noxus nodded her head and spurred the only calm horseback to the castle while the rest of the party still stood around in shock. Adrian gripped his sister’s shoulder hard and pulled her towards him to whisper a quick spell to calm the rage she was struggling to control. He knew she would never have allowed this if he had asked, but she needed to be calm to report everything to their mother.
“Now that we aren’t at each other’s throats, let’s go home.” He said.

He mounted his horse and indicated that Derric carry the unconscious man to the castle. Displaced from her usual seat, Vitex attached herself to Gorma’s back, as if getting a piggyback ride. Gorma mounted her Warg without looking at the Ghoul King and his companion and followed the prince.

“You know,” started Vitex, “Power isn’t only in muscles. The spoken word can be quite powerful too. The little game you two are playing is most amusing and I will enjoy seeing where it leads in the future.”

Mortis assisted Magna in mounting his horse before he mounted his. Then, as the rest of the party continued to the castle, he came up on Millmor’s side and asked, “Where did you find Robert and what is going on.”

“I think that story needs to be uncovered once we are in the castle. There is a lot to discuss.”
