School life is a long journey; so often we feel like time stands still and that the weeks of exams and project deadlines will never end. However, when that decisive day finally arrives, a mix of nostalgia and pride washes over us, making us aware of all the changes, laughter, and lessons that took place quietly while we were busy going about our daily lives.
I was recently looking through some photos of my teenage son, and when I compared pictures from his junior year to the end of his senior year, the physical and mental changes were evident. He used to be a very thin boy, but he was always focused, disciplined in his training, and steadfast in pursuing each of his goals. Seeing him maintain that discipline over the years has given me immense peace and joy as a mother. Throughout this journey, he knew how to surround himself with a close-knit group of friends who today proudly celebrate having achieved the goal of becoming high school graduates of the Republic.
Of course, the path wasn’t straightforward or easy. Along the way, many classmates fell by the wayside, but this group of brave young people decided to persevere. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, the daily struggles of routine, and the severe crisis our country is facing, they did not give up. Neither did their parents, who served as the quiet support system through all those late nights and school projects. Today, they are reaping the rewards of that collective effort, graduating with excellent GPAs and their eyes fixed on the future.
The most beautiful thing about this stage is seeing how genuine friendship transcends the classroom walls. Although each of them has plans to pursue different college majors, they’ve decided to maintain an unbreakable bond through sports: they train together on the same team. It’s a beautiful paradox; while classrooms and professional specializations will begin to take them in different directions, the field and their passion for sports will keep them united.
Graduation day was filled with deeply moving moments. Celebrating alongside our loved ones is wonderful, although immigration realities and space limitations at the venues meant that some family members could not be physically present. Nevertheless, technology showed its best side: seeing several screens connected via video calls right in the middle of the ceremony, live-streaming every second to family members far away, was a reminder that love knows no distance when there’s a will.
Today we celebrate life, achievements, and, above all, that friendship that has stood the test of time. These are young people who played, studied, shared difficult moments, and always strove to excel in every project they undertook together. I am very excited to think about the future and look ahead. I hope that life will allow me, in a few years, to reunite these same young people—no longer in their high school graduation gowns, but as the doctors, engineers, and upstanding professionals they dream of becoming.
May God always guide each of their steps, and may He continue to grant us, their parents, the wisdom we need to accompany them through every chapter of their lives.
