Hello, friends at Holos & Lotus. It’s a pleasure to greet you here again. Today I want to share with you my experience with an excellent medical consultation I had recently. This appointment represents a very significant step in the healing process I’m undergoing as part of my post-traffic-accident rehabilitation treatment.

To give you a little context, I’ll explain that in order to move forward with my recovery, I urgently needed a physiatry consultation. I initially prepared myself mentally and went to an appointment at a public health facility with a recommended doctor. However, even though we talked, he didn’t physically examine me or touch me at any point. He simply listened to me and reviewed my medical history based on what I told him, so I felt that diagnosis lacked direct contact with the injury.

Determined to seek a much more thorough evaluation, I looked for an alternative in the private sector, and the difference was like night and day from the very first moment. I connected very well with the doctor because there was a wonderful sense of empathy between patient and doctor. She did take the time to examine me thoroughly, palpate each of the areas where I felt pain, assess the tender spots, and analyze in detail how the accident occurred and how the injury had spread to my knee and leg.

The most valuable aspect of this consultation was that we went beyond the strictly physical to address the emotional side. When a doctor has the sensitivity to understand what a patient is going through, they don’t just focus on the prescription or the physical pain—they go beyond everyday emotions. We began to talk openly about how an accident or a sudden limitation changes you, transforms you, and severely disrupts your daily routine.

Overnight, you find yourself unable to do the simplest tasks—from running an errand on your own to taking your children to school with your usual ease. In my own case, my biggest concern isn’t a desperate urge to get back on my scooter right away. What has hurt and worried me the most during this time is feeling that my independence is being limited.

I was the kind of person who, when at home, if I suddenly felt like going to the supermarket to pick up anything I needed, would start up my scooter and head out without a second thought to get it done. If I didn’t find what I was looking for, I’d ride to the next supermarket, or if in the afternoon I felt like having a sweet treat or a cup of coffee, I’d go to the bakery, run my errands, and come back at my own pace—or take my son with me to run errands together.

Sometimes we don’t realize how valuable that independence is until it’s taken away from us. It really bothers me quite a bit to depend on public transportation because I feel like it’s very slow, just like having to wait for someone to take me somewhere or pick me up. Fortunately, during this long and drawn-out healing process, I’ve regained my basic mobility; thank God I can walk well and straight, but often when I put weight on my foot, it still hurts where I’m injured, and I’m afraid of hurting myself further or bending it too much.

Since I hadn’t undergone any specific treatment for that inflammation, we’ve now formally started it with some injections prescribed by the doctor, who warned me that, since they’re steroids, they’ll affect my weight. It’s something I’m accepting with great maturity, especially given the weight I’ve already gained during this entire period of rest when I was forced to pause my physical training, but I understand that it’s a necessary step to heal from the inside out and get back on track.

This appointment was the first medical consultation I so desperately needed and wanted, as I loved how this latest doctor treated me—how she listened to me and understood my overall condition—to guide me into the second phase: physical rehabilitation with the right exercises to regain my muscle strength. I feel that this appointment and this treatment are opening the door to other processes I’ll be undergoing from here on out.

I believe this healing process is emotionally intertwined with many things, because being able to heal will allow me to move freely and do the things I want and need to do with complete independence. With this physical recovery and the right treatment, I’ll be able to return to my routines with total autonomy, finish the master’s degree I’m about to complete, go back to the gym, and continue with home projects like painting. The biggest lesson I’ve learned from this phase is that healing is holistic and that, when we’re listened to by empathetic professionals, we’ll find our way back to flowing at our own pace.
