Hello everyone, friends of Empower Talent. It’s a pleasure to greet you all and to be able to actively participate in the community’s weekly initiative.Today I want to talk about the topic proposed by the initiative, which refers to living to be 100 years old. Although it may sound a bit humorous, the truth is that sometimes I’ve mentally and emotionally prepared myself as if I were absolutely certain that those extra 100 years are guaranteed for me. I’ve come to realize that this attitude has a very clear name: faith and hope. It’s like having an internal alarm set for the future. There are people who say they have no hope or who prefer not to get their hopes up. However, when I think about all the things I still have left to do—everything I want to build, write, learn, and experience—I feel it with the fullness of someone who has those full 100 years at their disposal. I know very well that life is uncertain, and that the harshest truth is that we’re here today and don’t know about tomorrow; but in my mental programming and in my day-to-day experience, I live it as a beautiful certainty that drives me forward every day.Throughout my journey, I’ve experienced about three or four life-threatening situations that could have cut short the life I so long to enjoy—from accidents to serious health issues in which I felt time was running out. However, I’ve always held the deep conviction that it has been God watching over me, protecting me, and keeping me safe from all harm and despair.

I’ve gone through health problems and extremely dark emotional times—the kind where it seems like nothing is worth it. Even though I’ve experienced depression firsthand and suffered irreplaceable family losses that leave indelible marks on the soul, I’ve always chosen life. That enthusiasm for moving forward has prevailed even in the most difficult circumstances. Turning off the light, giving up, or wanting to end my life has never been part of my plan.

I remember that some time ago, when I went through a depressive episode, I began to closely observe just how fragile our minds can be. Unfortunately, I’ve seen cases of people who, for far less, have decided to take their own lives. In my city, there was a heartbreaking wave of suicides, mainly among young men and college students barely 20 years old who had their whole future ahead of them but fell victim to stress and depression. It pains me deeply to see these cases, because I believe that depression is a real emotional illness: our minds and emotions get sick just as the body does when we catch the flu or a respiratory infection. That’s why it’s vital to take care of our minds, nurture them, and provide them with the proper attention and treatment.

Over time, we learn that becoming the best version of ourselves isn’t a linear or perfect process. Real change begins when we make a conscious decision to let go of what doesn’t serve us and say goodbye to whatever casts a shadow over our lives. And this applies to relationships, friendships, and even family dynamics. It’s not about selfishness, but about understanding that peace of mind is an inalienable right, because true happiness always goes hand in hand with peace of mind.

Personally, the wisdom that comes with age has taught me to carefully choose my friends and to know when I must give up certain comforts or situations that don’t contribute anything productive—that teach me nothing but discomfort. We must learn to discern between what benefits us and what only brings pain, tragedy, or discomfort. At this point in my life, my top priority is my peace of mind and my family’s safety, because I know that behind me there’s a team that needs me to be well. But above all, I want to be well for myself: to feel at peace, to decide when I want or don’t want to do something based on my own convictions and not because of pressure from others, respecting my own pace and not that of others.I value life 100%. I have a long list of goals, dreams, and projects still waiting to be realized, and if I haven’t accomplished many of them yet, it hasn’t been for lack of desire or willpower, but rather due to financial constraints.Even so, within this long list of actions to take and experiences to live within the mental span of a hundred years I’ve set for myself, many of the things I long for are pure adventures. I’m dying to go paragliding, for example; it’s an adrenaline-filled experience I want to live with my eyes wide open.I also want to learn another language, continue my studies, and earn a degree until I reach the highest level available in my country; I know I’m firmly on that path. But my goals are no longer limited to the individual level; they transcend that and become collective and family-oriented. As a mom, my greatest hope is to see my children educated, settled, at peace, fulfilled, and productive—not only for themselves but also for the people around them and to contribute value to our country.

Living is one of my greatest goals. Living is at the heart of my priorities: to continue wanting to live well, calmly, in peace, but above all, to be happy. Of course I want to live to be 100. I’m halfway there—a little closer to this point—but I’m determined to keep moving in that direction. I know I have the unshakable conviction that God is the one who takes care of me. He has done so very well; He has always been present, even when I can’t see or touch Him, protecting me and delivering me from all evil.

That’s why I invite you to trust, but also to work hard to build the life you want and to make your dreams come true. There’s no point in living a long life if we don’t dare to fulfill our purposes and goals.

That’s all for now. Thank you for reading; I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

I’m Yeli Marín, and I’ll see you next time.
