Hello, friends in this wonderful parenting community—I hope you’re all doing well. Today I want to vent a little here about something that happened to me recently involving my youngest son, which really upset me because of the carelessness and lack of supervision on the part of many parents.

It all started when my son was playing with one of his little friends—whose godmother I’m going to be. He was walking from my porch toward where my godson’s mom and dad were sitting. To put my mind at ease a little—since at that moment I didn’t have a direct line of sight to where they were sitting—I called out to them to let them know Diego was on his way over and asked them to please keep an eye on him in the meantime. We were actually very close, about 50 meters away, and the kids were constantly coming and going because they were playing with a ball.

During one of those trips back and forth, just as they were heading from where I was toward the group, a little girl came out of the building across the street. The first time Diego walked by, she just started chasing him; but the second time he walked by, the situation changed completely: she started pushing him and, suddenly, began beating him. What’s most upsetting is that my son has never had any kind of conflict or physical altercation with that girl. In fact, I know that in the neighborhood, people sometimes give him dirty looks simply because he’s my son.

Those who know me are aware that I don’t socialize with everyone in my neighborhood. Over the years, I’ve learned to be very selective about my friendships because I’ve seen a lot of hypocrisy, envy, and betrayal in my circle; I prefer to stay away from that kind of dynamic. We’ve never had any direct problems with the mother of the girl in question, but we aren’t friends either; we’ve known each other by sight as neighbors for about 12 years, and we’ve always been cordial and respectful toward one another, although her children have never gotten along with or played with mine.

When I rushed out in desperation to help him, the little girl—accompanied by another small group that looked like a real gang of brats—ran off to the other end of the building. To make matters worse, just then the evening darkness began to fall and the power had gone out in the area. Although I could still see a little, I wasn’t about to start chasing a group of kids all over the residential complex.

I immediately looked into what had happened and called the woman who was supposed to be keeping an eye on Diego. She came over, spoke with the girl who had attacked him, and, as expected, the little girl gave the usual excuses, denying everything and claiming that it had actually been the other way around. But I know my son very well: Diego isn’t a violent child. Besides, he’s not the type to spend the day wandering the streets; he’s always playing on the porch while I watch him, and when they go out, I sit on the sidewalk from the moment he leaves until he comes back inside.

I wrote to the mother to calmly explain how things had happened. Her initial response was that she hadn’t been there, but she immediately became defensive, saying that I shouldn’t have spoken to her that way either, that her daughter was just a child, and that besides, there wasn’t that much of an age difference between them. However, I spoke with the mother of the little boy—who will soon be my godson—and she confirmed what I already suspected: that little girl has serious behavioral problems. She told me that the girl is disrespectful to her own mother and that she, as a neighbor, has even been spoken to very rudely by the girl on several occasions.

The worst part happened a little while later, when we started watching the children play right outside the window of my apartment. From inside, I clearly heard the girl ordering the other girls who were with her: “When your mom asks, you all have to say that it was Diego who started the fight, that he was the one who hit her first”—all to prevent her own mother from scolding her. And, of course, the other children in the group went along with it and repeated exactly the same lie. The woman wrote to me saying that when she got home, she’d come to my apartment to sort this out… and I’m still waiting for her.

What strikes me most and leaves me thinking is seeing how, even at such a young age, some children already have such a highly developed ability to manipulate those around them, forcing others to lie to benefit some and harm the innocent. Unfortunately, one often sees that kind of dishonest behavior in the adult world, but seeing it reflected in children as young as 9 is shocking: that ability to organize themselves instantly and all repeat the same story.

Unfortunately, the manipulation went even further. One of the girls in the group approached the little boy who is going to be my godson and threatened him, saying that if he didn’t tell that lie, they would never play with him again. And of course, the boy—who comes to my house all the time, plays with my son, and whom I always welcome and treat with the utmost care—ended up giving in to the pressure. When this little friend’s mom brought him over so he could explain what had happened in front of us, my son told her, “Ask him—he was there when they were hitting me.” But when we asked him directly, the little friend backtracked and said he hadn’t seen anything, even though he knew perfectly well what had happened—just to avoid getting into trouble.

All of this teaches me a valuable lesson: even though we live in the same neighborhood and the children are similar in age, it’s clear that not all parents share the same level of responsibility or the same commitment to raising children with strong values. I can’t fathom how a mother could go out and leave her daughter alone on the street, nor how she could respond so casually, downplaying the aggression, when she knows her daughter’s behavior. If we turn a blind eye to these attitudes today, all we’re doing is sowing the seeds for a future of irresponsible adults who engage in bad behavior.

And what about you, friends in the community? Have you ever been in a similar situation? How have you dealt with other parents’ irresponsibility? I look forward to reading your comments.

I’m Yelimarín, and I’ll see you next time.
