Hello, friends at Home Solutions. I hope you’re having a wonderful Sunday with your families. Today I want to share a reflection and a process that many of us are passionate about: choosing colors to paint the interior of our homes and how, over time, we learn to create spaces that are truly harmonious.
To be honest, at first I didn’t know “a thing” about color theory or interior design. When I was single, I ended up creating color combinations in my bedroom that were way too bold for a space meant for rest. However, over the years and with experience, I’ve learned to make better decisions for my home.
Color is something I always take my time with, because things that don’t go together or overly saturated shades create visual noise for me very quickly. Initially, when I moved into this apartment, I painted it a champagne shade. Then I decided to switch it to a soft orange called “oruguayana,” a fairly muted shade that I also really liked the way it looked.
Some time later, I switched from orange to gray, a color I really enjoyed and that looked beautiful paired with white. In my apartment, there’s a long wall that I always make a point of keeping white, because that visual detail helps the entire space look much more spacious, longer, and filled with natural light.
The back, front, and hallway walls are the ones I tend to pair with contrasting shades. Although green has been my favorite color my whole life, pure green for interiors doesn’t quite work for my apartment. That’s why, this time, I was looking for a more balanced and elegant shade that would convey a sense of peace.
I recently visited some doctors’ offices, and they had a special shade of green: it wasn’t apple green or lime green—it was a green with grayish undertones. Since I’d already lived with gray for a few years, I wanted something different—just as understated and warm—but in a different shade that would revitalize the energy of my home.
My room was painted a muted blue, but I really needed a change. First, I painted my bedroom this jade green, and I loved the effect and the sense of calm it brought to the space. That’s when I decided to extend it to the rest of the apartment, and so far, I’m absolutely thrilled with the result.
That said, to pull this off, I had to take a real “master’s course” in painting. I started researching color theory and what each shade conveys, but I realized it’s not just about applying paint and seeing what happens—it’s about thoroughly analyzing the condition of the walls to achieve the best possible result.
Wasting a considerable investment in paint in a short amount of time isn’t an option—especially now that materials are becoming increasingly expensive. That’s why making smart, well-planned purchases is best. I ran into many setbacks with the walls in my room and had to take the time to understand the surface’s needs.
I had to tackle the imperfections so I could work on them and ensure a long-lasting result. The same thing has happened throughout the rest of the apartment, and although it’s been a somewhat grueling process because of the effort involved, what I’m seeing has been totally worth it.
I just bought a small can of paint, and I’m almost out, so I might have to buy an additional gallon to finish the laundry area. It’s worth noting that I’m only talking about the interior and common areas, where not all the walls are green—they’re combined with white.
We have other plans in the works for my kids’ rooms. My youngest son wants a different shade for his room, while my oldest son is thinking about putting up wallpaper. These are projects we’ll tackle little by little in due time.
Choosing a color isn’t something to be taken lightly, because color combinations matter a great deal both inside and outside. The exterior of my house is painted a bluish-green that looks more like turquoise; it’s an excellent exterior paint that’s held up perfectly for two years now.
It was very important for me to really focus on this color-selection process, because ultimately, it’s the shade that will be with you for quite some time. You have to feel that harmony and the peace of mind that comes from knowing you’ll be living with that choice in your day-to-day life in a pleasant way.
I have just a few walls left to finish before I start painting with a satin sheen—a technique I’ve never used before, it’s worth noting. Each wall has had completely different needs from the others, requiring special treatments before the final color could be applied.
That’s why it’s taken me much longer than I expected. My son is helping me with this project, and since he has his own things to do as well, we can’t paint every day. We’re working in stages: we do a little bit, wait for it to dry, then make a little more progress the next day, and so on.
Despite the breaks, I’m completely pleased with this Verona jade green. It conveys tranquility and calm to me, and I’m already eager to see how the rest of the apartment will look when it’s finished. I want every corner to convey that sense of peace I’ve been searching for.
My bedroom, which is already finished, turned out beautiful and complete. It feels incredibly harmonious and clean—it was a much-needed and well-executed change. In the rest of the apartment, we’re still working in stages due to time constraints, but the progress already looks lovely.
It’s essential to choose warm colors that convey a sense of calm, especially for areas like the living room. I’m the kind of person who needs to connect visually with my surroundings, and I don’t really achieve that connection with every shade. All of this also changes and matures over the years.
Sometimes we choose combinations we would never have considered in the past, but as we mature, we learn to seek out what truly does us good. What about you—what do you think about choosing colors? Do you just buy any color as long as the wall looks clean, or do you take the time to consider which shade will bring you peace this season?
