After a pretty strange week—what with teacher strikes, missed classes, and now a long weekend—work got way more intense, leaving me pretty exhausted since my whole routine was thrown off, so on Sunday I took the easy way out when it came to figuring out dinner.

At first I thought about kneading the dough myself and going through the whole process, but I’ve had to carry so many things from the supermarket, since everyone’s stocking up early for Christmas, that the strength in my hands has dwindled considerably. So my rest this weekend included that little detail, and I bought pre-made pizza crusts—they come already cooked, and you just have to add the sauce and toppings you like to bake them in no time.

Since we’re still trying to minimize screen time, we turned to the game wheel again to see which game we’d play tonight and spend some quality time with my little one. We ended up with Tic-Tac-Toe—or “la vieja,” as we call it in Venezuela—which I was glad about, since he loves long strategy games, while I prefer shorter ones—even if that means playing several rounds.

Unlike the other days of the week, when we have a late dinner because of my work schedule, today we ate at 8 p.m., which my son found strange, but it gave us extra time to play many more games. At first we played the traditional way, but then we started making non-traditional pieces every time it was our turn, and the idea was to come up with something the other person wouldn’t expect.

There was no shortage of laughter, and we truly had a wonderful hour filled with quick strategies, laughter, and playful cheating—because whenever he saw he couldn’t win, he’d take two spaces just to annoy my little one, who eventually started racking up gold on the board by placing the 67 wherever he chose.

And the best part is that I didn’t have to go to any trouble in the kitchen—in 15 minutes, dinner was ready, so we could finish enjoying the weekend with some quality time together without having to resort to anything other than our creativity.
