In the world of tattoos, opinions range from fashion and rebellious attitudes to rock music, ink, and many other connotations that aren’t always viewed favorably. However, this art form also has a gentle side: beyond being something to show off, it restores dignity to some people, filling in the gaps that life has left behind in one way or another.

One of these wonderful ways to use tattoos has been to recreate part of the area removed after a mastectomy to treat breast cancer, making the scar less painful for women when they look in the mirror.

Using ink and tattooing skills to promote the emotional well-being of many women has been one of the most commendable endeavors of tattoo artists around the world, who often volunteer their time free of charge so that female cancer survivors can look “normal” in the mirror after part of their body has been removed.

Similarly, many people with amputations have chosen to get funny or eye-catching tattoos that make them smile in the face of what others might see as a misfortune, demonstrating that a tattoo does not necessarily serve only an aesthetic purpose but also a contemplative one; since when viewed by both the wearer and anyone else, will not associate it with what is missing, but rather with the way they found to move forward and continue their lives despite what may have happened to them in the past.

Using tattoos as a form of healing in the face of adversity that may have left its mark on the body may seem like an unorthodox form of therapy to many, but it can, in a way, be a means of restoring dignity to those who have gone through a terrible experience that has left them with a scar as a reminder—a scar that, rather than carrying a negative connotation, allows them to tell themselves: “I was able to get through it.”
