Hello everyone! Today I am going to share a recipe on how to make rose sago cake. As the name suggests, it is made of sago. This is a famous local cake in my country. It is a sweet, soft cake that has a unique texture. It can be made in many colours and different styles.

Ingredients

Water

Oil

Sago - 1 cup
Sago is a type of starch. They are extracted from palm stems. They are quite soft. They are used as a food ingredient and sometimes, in certain art projects in schools as well. I remember making coloured glue from them to make an artwork for school. It was fun.

Sugar - 3 tablespoons
What is a cake without sugar?

Grated coconut - to your preference
This is to give some texture and reduce the sticky texture of the cake. This can be skipped if you like but be mindful that it will be sticky.

Food colouring - 3 drops
This is to give the cake a nice, bright colour. We used red colour but you can use any colour you like.

Method

First of all, we must cook the sago in some water. We did it in a pan. Cook it until it becomes soft and get a sticky texture.

While the sago is cooking, boil some water in a steamer. This is to steam the cake later.

The sago is heated and has a sticky texture now.

Add sugar to taste. We added 3 tablespoons of sugar.

Add the food colouring. Less is more so be mindful when you add them. You can always add more but you can't take the excess out. We added about 3 drops of food colouring.

Keep mixing it well so that the ingredients are all mixed and no lumps are formed.

It has started to boil now. Hence, it is the time to take it off the stove.

We poured it into a tray like this. Prior to that, do prepare the tray by putting a thin layer of oil on it.

Then, we realized that the tray won't fit the steamer. :(

So, we transferred everything to another tray with was round and could fit well. Lesson learned. I hope that you learn from our mistake and check whether the tray fits the steamer beforehand so you don't have to go through the hassle that we did.

This is how the steamer looks before putting anything in it.

So now we have placed the mixture inside the steamer. It will take about 20 minutes to be done.

Almost ready!

The steaming was done. We have taken it out. This is a cake that will be great when it is served after being refrigerated. So, once you take it out of the steamer, let it cool for a short while. Then, put it in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. It is better to let it cool a little first because hot items risk damaging the refrigerator when they are placed in it.

Cut it into little pieces and put it on the grated coconut. Roll it around to cover it with the coconut. This will reduce the sticky texture of the cake due to sago's nature.

Rose sago cake is ready to be served!
