Beautiful Turkeytail pattern

I took my #WednesdayWalk on the road. We went on a road trip cross country last week. Each driving day we picked a spot to hike for a break. Most days the hike was in a small state park. btw Thanks for hosting tattoodjay@tattoodjay.

Trailhead

Our walk today is through Chautauqua Creek Oxbow Preserve. https://chautauquawatershed.org/2019/02/28/chautauqua-creek-oxbow-forest-preserve/

The road in

The 23 acre park is in Chautauqua County, New York. Here is the country road leading into the park.

Start of trail

An information kiosk is near the trailhead.

Creek trail

Off we go down Creek Trail.

Nice shelf mushroom

Found some nice looking shelf mushrooms.

Soft artist's conk

Maybe soft artist's conk (Ganoderma lobatum)?

Shelf underside

Underside looks right for soft artist's conk.

Good shelf shot

I'm not foraging today, just taking photos so ID isn't as important.

More shelf mushrooms

Very pretty mushroom whatever the name 🙂

Turkeytail

Many nice examples of this mushroom. I think it is young turkeytail (Trametes versicolor). These are on a fallen log.

Turkeytail

Here are some growing on a stump.

Darker Turkeytail

A couple more examples of turkeytail mushrooms.

More turkey tail

I really like the pattern and color on turkeytail.

Green shelf mushroom

I believe this is also turkeytail just much older.

Stream

Creek Trail did eventually lead to a pleasant stream - Chautauqua Creek.

Downstream

We weren't fishing today but I could see there being trout in this stream.

Public fishing sign

And there is this sign ... 🤣

Switchback trail

Back on the trail, now named Switchback Trail.

Trail with marker

Trial led through a mature, mostly open forest.

Shaggy old tree

This impressive old tree is a maple with shaggy bark.

Tiny toad

I few critters along the way, like this small toad that was interestingly dark colored.

Larger toad

And this larger toad.

Salamander

Plus this small salamander. He looks rough but is just dirty. We did dig him out from under a rock lol. We carefully put him back and continued on.

State Forest

Here is a state forest sign - strategically located in a nice stand of trees 😁

Crinkle top mushroom

And the mushrooms kept coming. This is possibly a Boletus porosporus, the Sepia Bolete.

Crinkle mushroom underside

I took this shot of the stem and underside to help with ID after trip.

Decaying mushroom

These two mushrooms are a bit past their prime but I'm thinking Mycena galericulata or common bonnet.

Side view of decaying mushrooms

Second shot again for ID and just a fun photo 😉

Funky fungi

No idea what this UFO is 🤷‍♂️

Side view of funky fungi

Not all mushrooms are pretty.

Orange Mushroom

But these orange ones are very pretty.

Spikey Puffball

This is my final fungi photo I swear 😂 a funky, spikey puff ball. Probably Lycoperdon perlatum or common puffball.

Old Lyons Road

This is the trail back to the car.

Skull

Random skull on the forest floor. I think raccoon but I should have lifted it up to look at its teeth. Well honestly it was a little creepy so a quick photo was all I did.

Wildflowers

Finally some wildflowers but these are all the way on the edge of the park along the road.

Watershed sign

And my #WednesdayWalk ends with a close up of a sign explaining the Watershed Preserve Systems purpose. Have a great week!
