Shaggy Mane are a common, distinctive, wild mushroom in Vermont. Here is a link to some more info from wikipedia Shaggy Mane
Shaggy Mane are short lived mushrooms. Sometimes up and gone in a single day. They are growing several places around my home so I got several pictures of them in each stage of life. This picture shows them just emerging.
Young ones like these are supposedly edible but they don't last long so are hard to harvest and cook.
Here is one that is fully grown but not yet opening.
Once they fully grow they start to open.
I think Shaggy Mane are most photographic at this stage so I took several.
While they are opening, I think they look like a long hairdo with a flip or one of those 1920's moll hats, a cloche hat.
This is a great shot that shows an opening mushroom in the foreground and you can see other mushrooms farther along in the background.
Here's my favorite photo. A starburst. Often Shaggy Mane are already dissolving and black at this stage.
These mushrooms are starting to dissolve and turn black.
Lots of Shaggy Mane are already in this stage when you see them. Shaggy Mane grows under alot of my pine trees but I don't think that is general characteristic. I think they just like rich soil with decaying wood.
I didn't want to end with all those depressing dead mushrooms so here's another cluster of young Shaggy Mane just getting started.
