Welcome to Douglas Orchards in Shoreham, Vermont. Douglas Orchards is a 180 acre orchard that has been around for over 100 years founded in 1898.
Many of the orchard farmstands are basically just small retail stands, Douglas Orchards is a large, commercial orchard. The orchard was operated by the family for four generations but they recently retired.
The orchard was added to the Vermont Land Trust and then sold to another local orchard owner. The Vermont Land Trust requires the land continue to be used for agriculture and can not be subdivided.
The new owner has commited to operating the orchards separately. Here is the store. I had an apple turnover before heading out into the orchard.
Another view of the main building highlighting the beautiful sky. I think there is both a cider mill and maple syrup operation in the old building.
It is a working orchard with lots of activity in addition to the store and Pick-Your-Own. There were orchard workers out picking in part of the orchard while we were there.
A half a peck of apple is $10 which seems to be the going rate around our area. Donuts were $6 for a half a dozen and I had a turnover which was $4. The prices on baked goods were a little lower than some of the other orchards.
It was a beautiful fall day. The day started at 38F this morning but got all the way up to 60F.
Fall colors were evident around the orchard and on the drive over. It was a lovely day.
