Hi, Hive friends! I hope you're all doing great. I'm stopping by today to tell you a little more about the work trip I took during my vacation. I realize now that I should have started with this post, but it doesn't matter. What I want today is for you to get a general idea of what the job was about and to show you some photos of the team.

The last time I wrote, I told you that, in addition to being a teacher, I’m a Senior Technician in Industrial Ceramics—that’s my first degree and the field I enjoy working in the most. However, for various reasons, I don’t work in that field full-time, but at least I can do it occasionally when coworkers contact me about a job opening, or when the company I used to work for calls me. Sometimes these opportunities are here in Venezuela, and other times in Jamaica.
This latest job I took on, as I mentioned last time, was in Janaica, and it involved performing maintenance on alumina calciner number 1 at the Jamalco plant. Normally, my role is as a quality control supervisor; it’s my job to make sure all the work is done properly, and that’s what I’ve always done. But this year, I had to spend more time in the office preparing reports for the quality control team because the person who usually did that couldn’t go on that trip.

I prefer being a supervisor because I get to go into the calciners and see the whole process, but I was still able to do that, even if it was less often. Another thing was that this year I was assigned the day shift, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and I’d always been on the night shift before—which I liked better—but everything turned out fine anyway, and I was able to do what I enjoy.
Initially, the shutdown was scheduled for 28 days, but it was extended to 33 days because half of the furnace had to be removed for metalworking and mechanical repairs. In the end, several cyclones, ducts, and crossovers were repaired, as well as a large part of the furnace and holding vessel, taking into account the red flags that appeared on the thermoscan. This work was carried out in collaboration with Plibrico, the company that advises on and supplies the materials to be installed in the equipment.

It’s exhausting work, especially because of the high temperatures we work in and the amount of clothing and equipment we have to wear—and it’s even worse when we go down into the tunnels—but it’s a job I really like and enjoy, and I’m grateful that my coworkers and former bosses still trust me even though I’m not as active as others.
Overall, it was a very good assignment despite the days of delay—though we’re not complaining because we get paid by the day 😁
Well, friends, that’s all for today. Now you know a little more about me. Take care, and until next time.
