We put that door in years ago in the middle of the hallway because we’re on the second floor of the house, and since we had air conditioners, we had to do that so the cool air wouldn’t escape. At that time, we installed the door and put up drywall from the door frame to the ceiling, taking advantage of the fact that there was a beam there.
Doing that also helped with privacy, because it made the space feel like a two-bedroom apartment—with a kitchen, dining room, living room, and bathroom—but a few months ago, my mother-in-law moved downstairs, and we had the entire upper floor to ourselves, so we took the opportunity to move Miranda out of her brother’s room so that everyone could have their own space.

Esa puerta la pusimos hace años en la mitad del pasillo porque estamos en la segunda planta de la casa y como teníamos aires acondicionados había que hacer eso para que no se escapara. En esa ocasión se puso la puerta y se instaló drywall desde el marco de la puerta hasta el techo, aprovechando que había una viga allí.
Hacer eso también nos ayudó con la privacidad, porque quedamos como con un tipo de apartamento con dos cuartos, la cocina, comedor sala y baño, pero hace unos meses la suegra se mudó para la planta de abajo y todo el piso de arriba nos quedó libre y aprovechamos para que Miranda saliera del cuarto de su hermano y cada quien tuviese su propio lugar.

That’s a job for a carpenter, but the one we know has left us hanging—he says he’s going to come but never does. We’d even installed the new air conditioner, but we couldn’t turn it on because the air was leaking out. But since it’s so hot, I decided I was going to move it myself and see what we could do with the top part.

La cosa es que ese cuarto y otro más quedan por fuera de la puerta y teníamos que moverla para que mi hija no quedara fuera, entonces había que ampliar el apartamento 🤣
Ese es un trabajo que debe hacer un carpintero, pero el que conocemos nos ha dejado embarcados, dice que va a venir y nada y ya hasta habíamos montado el nuevo aire acondicionado y no se podía prender porque se nos iba el aire, pero como el calor está tan bravo decidí que yo la iba a mover y ver qué podíamos hacer con la parte de arriba.
My son and my wife took the door down together, and then Matías helped me install it on the other side of the hallway. I had to drill holes to secure the frames with screws and wall plugs. The door frame had two parts—one like a frame and the other part that attaches to it—but we ran into a problem because the frame wouldn’t fit into place, even though it’s in the same hallway but further down.
What I had to do was secure everything as best I could and leave one side without the frame, just with the frame itself, and I’ll have to take that part of the frame to get it cut, but at least the door is already in place, and for the entire top part, what I did was put up black bags and tape them down with masking tape while we continue looking for a carpenter or someone to install the drywall, but at least we’ve got that closed off, and my daughter was able to move into her room, and we have the air conditioners on, so we’re not suffering from the heat.

Entre mi hijo y mi esposa desmontamos la puerta y después Matías me ayudó a montarla en el otro lado del pasillo. Tuve que hacer los huecos para fijar los marcos con tornillos y ramplugs. El marco tenía dos partes, una como un armazón y el marco que va fijado al armazón, pero tuvimos un problema porque el marco no calzaba en su lugar y eso que es en el mismo pasillo pero más adelante.
Lo que tuve que hacer fue fijar todo lo que se pudo y dejar un lado sin el marco, solo con el armazón y hay que llevar esa parte del marco para que la corten, pero por lo menos la puerta ya está puesta y en toda la parte de arriba lo que hice fue poner bolsas negras y las pegué con tirro de papel mientras que seguimos buscando algún carpintero o alguien para montar el drywall, pero tan siquiera tenemos eso cerrado y mi hija se pudo ir para su cuarto y tenemos los aires prendidos y no estamos padeciendo con el calor.
Now I hope we don't take too long to fix that because my wife isn't too happy with how it looks with the bag on top, but she'd rather it look ugly than die of heat 🤣
