"She's too old to watch Peppa Pig and cartoons as a baby and she shouldn't be playing with dolls anymore, she's almost ten " .
Happy #motherhood daddies day once again with you! I hope you had a great week and are safe from so many crazy viruses rolling around today.
For my part I would like to say that my week was quiet, but even though Matias had few activities and Miranda didn't, so I was begging for Friday to come because it is also one of the two days when they don't have extracurricular activities, so I can be at home without so much fuss and I decided it was a good time to talk about a topic that was on my mind a few days ago.
As you know I have a 12 year old teenager and a 9 year old girl who is about to turn 10 on December 26th, God willing. Both have been very different in every possible aspect including their development, that is to say each one has had different times for everything and although Miranda had a quite marked speech delay until after the age of six she walked much earlier than her brother, who did it after his first birthday when she was already walking at ten months!
What I mean by this is that I don't think there is a set time for everything, although at the doctors' level there are established time frames for children to reach or accomplish certain aspects of their development, but as each individual is unique those time frames can vary without implying that something is wrong.
In Miranda's case she has always been very babyish in some things because she really is an independent child since she was little but I think the fact of being the little one in the house has made us spoil her more to the point that she has said she always wants to be little!
And I don't want you to misunderstand me, my two children receive love and both are super spoiled. I kiss them and sing to each of them when they wake up, in fact each one has a special song when they wake up. Anyway, at home the treatment is the same but I assume that Miranda is very different from her brother in terms of personality and tastes, although they also have aspects in which they find each other.
For example, they really enjoy anime suitable for their ages, some TV series, board games and legos. But their personalities are very different; Miranda although she is super independent from a young age her tastes are very different from other girls her age.
She still enjoys playing with her dolls and watching cartoons that are considered to be for younger children. She has a little stuffed dragon that she never leaves her side and she celebrates her birthday with a cake and a lot of planning that includes invitations, games, snacks, etc.
And in view of that lately both her dad and my mom have been commenting that Miranda is too old for that kind of attitudes and that's where the sentence with which I started my post today comes from because I wonder if there is such a thing as an age limit to play with dolls or watch cartoons as a toddler?
For me the answer is obvious, THERE IS NOT, every child (yes, even at 10 she is a girl!) has different tastes, no one is equal to anyone else and just because other girls don't do certain things anymore doesn't mean Miranda should stop doing or watching something she enjoys.
Today there is a very crazy phenomenon in which it seems that parents want their children to grow up super fast, to do everything on their own as soon as possible, to go to school and then they want to see them in high school and be adults and in that rush they make them lose their childhood, by far the best stage of our lives. The one where they pamper us, take care of us, fill us with love and our days are just games and laughter.
And I ask myself. Why would anyone want their children to skip so much happiness in order to mature faster? Each stage of life should be enjoyed to the fullest and childhood is one of them and this includes from birth until the age of twelve, a stage in which adolescence begins and eye, it is not that by the age of twelve they have matured, each child has its process and its times, but legally in our country, twelve years mark the entrance to adolescence, which is accompanied by other rights and responsibilities.
Y yo me pregunto.
In my experience as a mom I can see that my 12 year old son although he is already a teenager according to our laws is very different in terms of behavior to other children his age, even younger. In fact, he has a cousin of the same age who already has a girlfriend and his behavior is completely different from my son's (fortunately).
So I could worry because my two children are not what you normally see in children of their ages in terms of behavior and tastes, because in terms of their physical and cognitive development they are according to their ages, only that for example Miranda does not live singing reggaeton or moving her body like a woman, nor my son Matias is interested (yet) in dating relationships or in behaviors of 15 year olds as some young people of his own age are.
But the truth is, far from worrying, I am happy that they are living their stages. Yes, my daughter still plays with dolls, doesn't wear makeup, doesn't paint her hair with colored locks and doesn't behave like an adult woman or teenager. My daughter is a GIRL and she doesn't have to be or do what everyone else does, simple as that.
She has her tastes, her interests, her times and something very important, she has a completely different home formation than the others. She although from the age of three has access to technology with the use of tablets always played things according to her age and although since she was a baby she watches TV she was never allowed to watch whatever she wanted on TV, in fact they still both watch what they are allowed at home. So they are not exposed to what most kids today are exposed to and that is not why there is something wrong with them.
My children listen to music, but an appropriate music for their age, no songs with vulgar themes or obscene words that I do not allow them to say and that now abound everywhere but neither in my car nor in my house are heard, because I, their mother, the one in charge of their education considers it is not right.
So my girl doesn't know how to dance sexy, she doesn't listen to Bad Bunny, she is a girl who plays with dolls and watches cartoons. But as with everything, this is a very personal thing. Everyone has their own way of upbringing but sometimes they make me doubt with certain comments even in my own home, recently my husband was calling her attention because she was watching Peppa Pig claiming that she was "too old " to watch that cartoon.
And then a few days ago I told my mom what Miranda wanted for Christmas (a stuffed dog inside her kennel with accessories) and she told me that Miranda was too big for that kind of toy, which of course got me thinking if maybe they were right and Miranda should stop with that kind of thing, so I watched it.
And I was able to deduce that yes, Miranda is still very much a child and enjoys little girl things, but she is a GIRL! She is still a child and I don't think there is anything wrong with doing the things she still enjoys because she is a model child. Miranda is in 4th grade, in orchestra learning two instruments and she practices ballet and in every single thing she does she is excellent, from her studies to ballet.
She is a completely independent girl, even more so than her teenage brother, she rarely asks for help to do anything, she is creative, very intelligent and has such a particular way of looking at life that I really doubt that not being the same as girls her age is hurting her in any way.
Maybe she's more innocent or doesn't know some things that other girls handle perfectly, maybe she is not aware of the trends on Tiktok nor does she know the trendy Tik Tokers or Youtubers because she is a kid and I don't allow her to use any social network. The time will come, but right now it's not. That's why Facebook and many others are asking for the age of majority.
Anyway, thanks to the comments of my mom and my husband I was doubting a little about how Miranda is growing up but those doubts were quickly dispelled and if she is more of a girl than the others I prefer her like this, I prefer her as a girl rather than a mini woman. She wears girl clothes, girl shoes and girl accessories.
She doesn't wear makeup unless it's to play at home and she doesn't see or hear anything that isn't age appropriate. She acts like a girl because she is a girl. Maybe not a modern girl like today but that's how she is perfect and with that in mind I talked to my mom and husband to completely eliminate those types of comments that definitely hurt her self-confidence. She is a child and acts like one, nothing more, nothing less.
Many times we speak so lightly about our children, about their behavior, qualities and defects without realizing the damage we do with some carelessly pronounced word and that we think that since they are small it does not affect them and nothing could be further from the truth. They may listen quietly and do not show that they care about what we say, but I assure you from my own experience that there are things that are engraved in your soul and penetrate to the depths and it is very difficult to uproot them from us.
And about this, specifically in Miranda's case and as a result of comments like "you are too old for this or that " something happened that caught my attention and that is why I talked again with my mother and my husband.
As I told you at the beginning she has a special attachment to a stuffed animal she calls Bubu and she celebrates his birthdays, in fact last year's birthday was the subject of a post, my first post voted by appreciator so you can imagine her joy to see that Bbubu's post had gone so well.
The thing is that a month ago she started with Bubu's birthday preparations. She made cards, already knows what games will be made and what she wants us to make for food to share since last year she had cake, cookies and lemonade, so she passed on her list. And yes friends, we did a stuffed animal birthday and she was happy and not just her. We had a great time that afternoon enjoying our little girl's witticisms.
But this year the comments started to take effect and once she told her grandmother about the party and even asked her to make a dress for Bbubu, because her grandmother is good at sewing and her answer was "you are too big for that ".
And Miranda who is a girl who analyzes everything, of course felt that they were right and that she should grow up so one day she told me crying that she wanted to make this birthday special because she was growing up and she didn't know if next year she would want to continue playing with Bbubu. Of course I started crying with her because her tenderness and concern touched my heart, so I immediately talked to Jose and my mom so they would understand the effect their words had on her.
Luckily they stopped using those kind of phrases and my mom ended up making a very nice dress for Bbubu and with that we surprised her one day when she came home from school. Needless to say, Miranda was happy! And that's what I love about my little girl; her innocence, her tenderness, her sensitivity, her good heart, how sweet she is and if that makes her look like a child to the others, I don't really care!
We watch Peppa together, even though I hate her, we watch Bluey and Baby TV whenever she wants, I take care of Bbubu when she goes to school in the mornings and she takes care of her and I leave her in her bed when she is about to arrive. I wish she could be a girl forever, but I wish with all my strength to see her become the wonderful young woman she will be, but for now she is my little girl, the little girl of the house and she will live each stage as slow as she wants and needs.
So no, there is no expiration date for being a child. I wish we could all be like a little boy because the purity of his heart and feelings are incomparable!
Thank you for joining me in reading. Kisses and blessings!
Besitos y bendiciones!
