I have mentioned a couple of times that, for the past few years, I have been collaborating with an art project called La Macolla Creativa. The project has several objectives, including research into weaving with natural fibers as well as synthetic fibers or PVC to foster circular economies. Another goal of the project is to create traveling artist residencies that allow emerging artists to develop funded artistic proposals within the country.
He venido contando en par de ocasiones que desde hace unos a帽os vengo colaborando con un proyecto art铆stico llamado la Macolla Creativa, el proyecto tiene varios objetivos entre los cuales se encuentra la investigaci贸n con tejido de fibras naturales y tambi茅n con tejidos de fibras sint茅ticas o de PVC para crear econom铆as circulares. Otro de los objetivos del proyecto es la creaci贸n de residencias art铆sticas itinerantes que permitan a artistas emergentes desarrollar propuestas art铆sticas financiadas dentro del pa铆s.
In the past, Macolla Creativa has hosted a couple of residencies, though the artists stayed at the home of the project's creator and leader, located in the La Pastora parish of Caracas, Venezuela, as the space lacked a suitable workshop for developing visual art projects. Consequently, the decision was made to convert the basement of that same house; over the past year, we have been carrying out renovations to transform the basement into an art creation studio.
En el pasado la Macolla creativa a realizado un par de residencias, solo que se alojaba a los artistas en la casa del creador y l铆der del proyecto que est谩 ubicada en la parroquia de la pastora en la ciudad de Caracas, Venezuela; el espacio no cuenta con un taller apropiado para el desarrollo de propuestas pl谩sticas. A ra铆z de all铆 se tom贸 la decisi贸n de habilitar un s贸tano que est谩 en esa misma casa; en el transcurso de este 煤ltimo a帽o hemos estado realizando remodelaciones para adaptar el s贸tano como un taller de creaci贸n art铆stica.
We have carried out numerous renovations on the basement space, but I feel that this latest one which I am sharing with you today, has been the most significant; we set out to install a bathroom so the basement could function independently as a studio for pursuing artistic disciplines such as ceramics, sculpture, and graphic arts (including printmaking and screen printing), alongside the ongoing research into textiles.
Al espacio del s贸tano le hemos realizado much铆simas remodelaciones, pero siento que esta 煤ltima que hoy les comparto ha sido la m谩s trascendental, ya que nos dimos a la tarea de habilitar un ba帽o para que el s贸tano se pueda independizar como taller en donde podamos desarrollar especialidades art铆sticas en el 谩rea de la cer谩mica, la escultura, las artes gr谩ficas como grabado y serigrafia, aparte de la investigaci贸n sobre tejidos que seguiremos desarrollando.
First, we cleared out the entire back section of the basement and the bathroom so we could visualize the planned renovation; I carried out this work in collaboration with Julio, the project leader and owner.
Primero desalojamos toda la parte del fondo del s贸tano, y el cuarto de ba帽o, para poder visualizar todo lo que se le iba a realizar como remodelaci贸n, este trabajo lo realice en colaboraci贸n con Julio que es el l铆der y due帽o del proyecto.
We installed new electrical wiring for the bathroom and new clean-water piping connections; we also had to design the sewage piping, as the original lines had been sealed off long ago.
Le hicimos su instalaci贸n el茅ctrica nueva al ba帽o y tambi茅n las conexiones de tuber铆as de aguas limpias son nuevas, tambi茅n se le tubo que dise帽ar las tuber铆as de aguas negras, ya que las que ten铆a hace mucho tiempo se las hab铆an sellado.
The final steps involved coating all the walls with cement and filling a hole in the floor. All that remained was to paint and install a few small items, such as the toilets and a utility sink.
Lo 煤ltimo que se realiz贸, fue encamisar todas las paredes con cemento y cubrir un hueco que hab铆a en el piso. quedaba pintar e instalar varias cositas como los inodoros y una batea.
That installation work was done by a neighbor of Julio someone who does this kind of job professionally. He had to lay the bathroom floor tiles and install the toilet and a urinal inside the bathroom, as well as a small utility sink outside. Everything else was already set up, including the base for the utility sink and a table built for the back of the workshop; there is a tiled wall at the rear that we liked for the aesthetic it created in the space, so we decided to leave it as is.
Esa instalaci贸n la realizo un vecino de Julio, que se dedica como profesi贸n a realizar ese tipo de labores, ten铆a que pegar las baldosas en el piso del ba帽o, tambi茅n instalar la poceta y un urinario dentro del ba帽o, y afuera tiene que instalar una batea peque帽a, ya todo lo dem谩s estaba listo, la base para la batea y una mesa que se hizo para el fondo del taller; al fondo hay una pared de azulejos que nos gust贸 como genera su propia est茅tica para el talle y la decidimos dejar sin remodelaci贸n.
We now have a physical workshop nearly ready to host an artistic research laboratory bearing the Macolla Creativa stamp; step by step, we will continue to advance these projects, fostering the growth of art as a circular economy and educating the next generation of emerging artists. Ya tenemos un taller f铆sico casi listo para que se pueda generar un laboratorio de investigaci贸n art铆stica con sello de la Macolla Creativa, paso a paso seguiremos avanzando en estos proyectos que nos permitan impulsar el crecimiento del arte como econom铆a circular y educar a las pr贸ximas generaciones de artistas emergentes.
