On June 24th of this year, a seismic event occurred that shook the lives and consciousness of all Venezuelans. I live in a small city called Guarenas, located very close to the country’s capital; fortunately, however, this area did not suffer major structural damage from the seismic doublet—two consecutive, high-magnitude earthquakes—though a few facades of older houses were affected. My immediate family and I spent the night together to steady our nerves; with no electricity in the area, we were completely cut off from communication. It was only when power was restored that we learned of the scale of the disaster in the La Guaira region, which was the area most severely impacted by the two earthquakes.
El pasado 24 de Junio del presente año sucedió un evento sísmico que sacudió la vida y conciencia de todos los venezolanos, yo vivo en una pequeña ciudad llamada Guarenas, muy cerca de la ciudad capital del país, pero gracias al universo en esta zona el doblete sísmico (ya que fueron dos terremotos seguidos de gran magnitud) no ocasiono grandes daños en la infraestructura de las edificaciones, solo unas cuantas fachadas de casas antiguas se vieron afectadas; junto a mis familiares cercanos pasamos la noche en unidos para calmar los nervios, ya que no había luz eléctrica en la zona, andábamos incomunicados. Cuando se restauró el servicio eléctrico fue que nos enteramos de la magnitud de desastre que ocurrió en la zona de la Guaira, considerada la zona más afectada por los dos terremotos.
At that time, I was working for the Ministry of Public Works in the capital, specifically within the visual arts division, focusing on the restoration of the nation’s cultural heritage. We were in the process of restoring a mausoleum at the General Cemetery in the southern part of Caracas. The day after the earthquake, we went to check on the condition of the structure we had been restoring; however, all restoration work was called off that same day, and the entire Public Works staff was summoned to La Guaira to provide whatever assistance we could. Without hesitation, we answered the emergency call and gave our absolute best to rescue lives from the rubble.
En ese entonces, yo estaba trabajando con el ministerio de obras públicas en la capital, desde la parte de las artes plásticas en restauración de patrimonios culturales de la nación, estábamos restaurando un mausoleo en el cementerio general del sur de la ciudad de Caracas; al siguiente día, luego del terremoto, fuimos a revisar como había sido afectada la estructura en la que estábamos restaurando, pero ese mismo día cancelaron todas las labores de restauración y todo el personal de obras públicas fue solicitado para ir a la Guaira a ayudar en lo que pudiéramos. Sin dudarlo atendimos el llamado de emergencia y fuimos a dar lo mejor de nosotros para rescatar vidas de entre los escombros.
The highway connecting Caracas to La Guaira was extremely congested, as a great many people—driven by a sense of solidarity—responded to the emergency call. We set off at 9:00 a.m. and managed to reach Catia la Mar (an area in La Guaira) by 3:00 p.m. At the checkpoint where we arrived, the leader of the team I was working with received instructions to head to a specific location to provide assistance; it took us another four hours to get there, by which time night was already falling.
La autopista que conecta Caracas con la Guaira estaba super congestionada, ya que muchísima gente en solidaridad acudió al llamado de emergencia, salimos a las 9 de la mañana y logramos entrar a Catia la mar (una zona de la Guaira) a las 3 de la tarde. En ese punto de control donde llegamos le dieron indicaciones al jefe del equipo con que yo estaba trabajando para que fuera a un lugar en específico para que ayudáramos; nos tardamos 4 horas más en llegar a ese lugar, ya estaba cayendo la noche.
When we finally arrived at the designated location, we realized that our task would simply be to clear away debris from several collapsed structures—not that this wasn't a necessary job, but I found it deeply frustrating. We had both the tools and the desire to help victims buried under rubble elsewhere nearby, yet we were being assigned to clear an empty site while there were far more urgent needs in the surrounding area.
Cuando por fin llegamos al lugar indicado, nos dimos cuenta de que solo íbamos a levantar escombros de varias estructuras colapsadas, (no es que eso no fuera necesario hacerlo) pero a mí me indigno mucho eso, porque teníamos las herramientas y la voluntad para ayudar a víctimas que estaban enterradas bajo escombros en otros lugares cercanos a donde nos encontrábamos y nos iban es a poner a limpiar en un lugar vacío, cuando hay más urgencias a los alrededores.
At one point during the night, a man who had been wandering around the area began speaking with the team leader. He convinced us to move to a nearby spot—the ruins of the building where he had lived—explaining that his family members might still be trapped beneath the rubble. We relocated and began clearing debris, digging openings to gain access to what had been the man’s apartment. We spent the entire night at this task, taking turns to sleep for an hour or two before returning to the work of moving rubble.
Hubo un momento en la noche que un señor que estaba dando vueltas por el lugar, comenzó a hablar con el jefe del equipo y lo convenció de que nos mudáramos para otra parte ahí cerca en donde se encontraba las ruinas del edificio donde él vivía y que posiblemente sus familiares habían quedado bajo los escombros. Cambiamos de locación y comenzamos a despejar los escombros para ir cavando huecos por donde pudiéramos acceder a lo que fue el apartamento donde vivía el señor; pasamos toda la madrugada en eso, nos turnábamos para dormir una o dos horas, para luego seguir moviendo escombros.
Morning arrived, and we were still searching several areas simultaneously, trying to locate the bodies of the individual’s relatives. A significant amount of humanitarian aid was mobilized from various parts of the country and the world; that morning, several relief teams arrived, bringing us food for breakfast to help keep our strength up, as the stench of decay was truly intense.
Llego la mañana y todavía seguíamos buscando en varias zonas a la vez para dar con los cadáveres de los familiares del sujeto. De verdad se movilizo mucha ayuda humanitaria desde distintas partes del país y el mundo, en la mañana llegaron varios equipos de ayuda a traernos comida para que desayunáramos y mantenernos fuertes, ya que el olor a putrefacción era bastante rudo.
At 9 a.m., we finally found the first body—I should note, first and foremost, that the man who lived there remained remarkably composed; he still held out hope that he might see his family alive. We recovered four bodies in a state of decomposition: a mother (the man’s wife) embracing her three children. It was a truly harrowing scene to discover those bodies in the position they were in; the mother had tried to protect her children until the very end.
A las 9 de la mañana por fin encontramos el primer cuerpo (ante todo quiero destacar que el sujeto que vivía allí se mantuvo siempre muy sereno, todavía tenía la esperanza de ver a su familia viva) sacamos 4 cuerpos en estado de descomposición, una madre (esposa del señor) abrazando a sus tres hijos. De verdad fue una escena muy brutal encontrar esos cadáveres en la posición que estaban, hasta el final la madre intento proteger a sus hijos.
It was only when the four bodies of his family members were placed before the man that he broke down and burst into tears—a heart-wrenching scene. I couldn’t hold back my own tears; it was an incredibly intense experience to witness. This man might well decide to take his own life after enduring such a tragedy; he has lost everything—his family, his home. It is profoundly difficult to find the will to go on living after losing the very people who give your life meaning.
Solo hasta el momento en que se colocaron los 4 cadáveres de sus familiares frente al sujeto fue que se quebró y reventó en llanto por su familia, una escena desgarradora, no pude aguantar las lágrimas en mis ojos, una experiencia muy fuerte de vivir. Posiblemente ese sujeto decida quitarse la vida luego de vivir esta desgracia, perdió todo, su familia, su hogar; es bastante difícil querer aferrarte a vivir nuevamente después de perder a los seres que le dan sentido a tu vida.
The anecdote I am sharing here is my way of finding catharsis after the experience I went through. Never before in my life had I witnessed a disaster of the magnitude that occurred in La Guaira. I do not intend to offend anyone—nor the memory of those who lost their lives—but rather to unburden my mind of everything I experienced during that brief period when we went there to help. This was just the first day; I plan to share two more anecdotes to bring this cathartic process to a close. I hope this causes no offense to the community. Good vibes.
Esta anécdota que estoy aquí narrando es mi manera de hacer catarsis por esta experiencia que tuve la oportunidad de vivir, jamás en mi vida había visto esta magnitud de desastre que ocurrió en la Guaira; con esto no busco ofender a nadie, ni la memoria de los fallecidos, solo quiero drenar lo que tengo en mi mente con todo lo que viví en ese breve periodo de tiempo que fuimos a ayudar. Este fue solo el primer día, voy a publicar dos anécdotas más para darle cierre a este proceso catártico, espero no causar ninguna molestia en la comunidad, buenas vibras.
