I stopped eating pork since this year’s Lent started. I could only describe how much I love pork. I always give up something during Lent. In the previous years, I’ve given up things I’d rather die than live without such as traveling. This year, I thought it was pork and any product containing pork. It was my humble sacrifice. At first, I found pork hard to resist. It’s everywhere. Not to mention the barbecue stands sending olfactory cues on my way home from the office.

I got into a few health-related troubles when I stopped eating pork such as constantly feeling weak, low hemoglobin count (my blood was rejected when I tried to donate at the nearest Red Cross branch), got dizzy more often than before and my blood pressure dropped to 70/40 at some point. But I was eager to finish the raise and to finish the raise strong. Yesterday, the fasting is finally over; I’ve eaten my first grilled pork at home with my nephew and niece. And as always, it’s the food I’d gladly eat every day in moderation. I’ve endured the challenge I gave myself. Thanks to my supportive parents who cooked fish or chicken meals when I’m at home.

During the last week of my fasting, I’ve found it difficult to eat something new that doesn’t contain pork. I was bored of the usual carenderia food I eat every day. I found this place serving vegan food during my lunch out in Cooee. I passed by it on my way back to the office. I told myself, I better visit the place next time. So I visited it the next day. I ordered their caldereta meal for only less than $2. I wonder what caldereta would taste like without meat and yes, it tasted like caldereta. It might not be as great as the caldereta’s I’ve tasted but given it has no meat, it’s pretty good. But the carbonara I ordered isn’t at all appealing just as how it looked pale and dry. The cucumber lemonade juice was on point tho! Would gladly drink it again.

To celebrate how I’ve fearlessly conquered the last 40 days without pork, I’m currently heading to treat myself in a nearby samgyeopsal place. I’ve been waiting for this day!
