Recently, I’ve been really enjoying tending to a small garden in a narrow patch of land right next to my house—specifically, next to the new garage my husband built. I’m so happy; after all this time, my dream of having a small garden where I can grow chili peppers, tomatoes, and other vegetables for my kitchen’s immediate needs has finally come true. Back when I was a young girl, I loved planting anything that would yield a harvest. But after I started working and got married, I stopped tending to plants altogether.
In my opinion, gardening isn’t just about planting—it’s a form of natural therapy that helps relieve stress. I can spend hours in the garden because gardening is just that enjoyable.
Today, I’d like to take you on a tour of my new mini garden. There aren’t many plants yet because I only started planting a month ago. I’m tending to this small plot, and it’s the safest spot for gardening—the light is good, and it’s out of sight of my neighbors’ pets and poultry.
Tomatoes have become the main plants in my garden; at first, I just scattered some leftover tomato seeds from the kitchen there on a whim. Eventually, they grew lush and bore fruit—this is the first time my tomatoes have grown so well.
They’re growing thick and tall, and while the fruits aren’t very large, that’s enough to make me happy. My first tomatoes thrived even without fertilizer; I just watered them and added kitchen scraps—fruit peels, vegetable peels, onion skins, and even eggshells—which served as natural fertilizer for the plants.
Yesterday morning I harvested the fresh spinach. Stir-fried spinach with tomatoes from my garden was an amazing inspiration for lunch at home.
Look at how fresh the spinach is—especially since it rained last night, the spinach grew very lush with a vibrant green color.This is wild spinach that grew on its own on my land yesterday, but when I pulled it up, I let the seeds scatter around the garden, so I was able to harvest it this time.
There’s yellow squash growing abundantly, Unfortunately, the yellow squash won’t bear fruit; whenever a fruit begins to form, it always rots. I’m not sure exactly what’s causing this. If you have any tips on how to get the squash to bear fruit, please let me know.
Here—I’m so happy to cook this clear vegetable soup, which is very useful at home. The chili peppers are starting to bear fruit, though there aren’t many yet and they’re still too young.
What started as just a small plot I planted, I expanded a little yesterday; I’m going to plant lots of tomatoes and chili peppers there.
Now, there’s something unique about my garden: I’ve created small raised beds using empty syrup bottles to hold the soil. I’ve arranged them neatly in each section near the wall. In the other sections, I’ll be planting in used rice sacks. I’ve already added fertile soil, topped with a layer of dry leaves.
I’m going to plant some vegetables; I already bought the seeds online yesterday. I hope my plants will grow well and that they’ll be very useful for me and my family.
An update on my garden right now
Here’s an update on my garden this week. I’ll post another update on some of my plants later, once I’ve successfully planted them and they’ve started growing there.
