Give yourself a fresh new experience if you want to enjoy an extraordinary snack time with new dishes at home.
Hi foodie lovers, I've been taking a break from Hive for a week, but it's not because I've stopped cooking. Something happened in my country, specifically in Aceh, Sumatra, Indonesia. We experienced a major disaster, River water overflowed everywhere, even spreading to several districts. Road access was cut off and we were almost starving at that time. Severe flooding, power outages, and a complete loss of internet access for five days. Even today, the electricity and signal are still unstable, which has really brought our activities to a halt. Many areas were affected by the disaster, and even now, our area has not fully recovered. Yesterday, the flood reached 1.5 meters in my house. Don't ask how I was at that time. I was really scared, and this was my first experience seeing such a large flood that spread across almost all districts in the province of Aceh. The storm will eventually pass, and I sincerely hope you all pray for our brothers and sisters who have lost their lives in this disaster. I am deeply afraid, but life must go on as it should. I'm back here to share my experience of cooking various warm dishes for your family at home.
Today I will show you how to make a simple bolen recipe. Bolen is one of the most popular snacks in Indonesia. Previously, I only knew of baked banana bolen, which comes in many varieties and is served in ways that I find challenging. This time, I want to try smoked beef bolen, which I think will have a different taste. While banana bolen is synonymous with sweetness, smoked beef bolen has a savory and salty taste. It's quite simple, and for those of you who love savory bread, this is the perfect choice.
The process of making the bolen crust takes quite a bit of time and requires extra patience. Similar to making a pastry crust, the bolen crust provides a finishing layer that makes it even more delicious. The simple filling of smoked beef and a mixture of cheese and milk makes it even more delicious.
Here, I will walk you through the preparation steps.
Ingredients
Ingredients for dough A
250 grams of wheat flour
50 grams of butter
20 grams of powdered sugar
200 ml of water
Salt to taste
Ingredients for dough B
200 grams of wheat flour
50 grams of butter
100 ml of cooking oil
Topping Ingredients
100 grams smoked beef
100 ml milk
50 grams cheese
Salt to taste
¼ onion
2 cloves garlic
1 clove shallot
1 teaspoon cornstarch
Preparation Steps
Prepare the dough. Mix the flour, sugar, and salt to taste, then add the butter.
Next, add water and stir until evenly mixed, then stir until the dough is smooth.
Then mix all the ingredients for dough B and stir until evenly mixed. The dough is ready to use. Let the dough rest for a while.
While waiting for the dough to rest, I prepared the bolen topping. I cut the smoked beef into small pieces. Then I also chopped the onions into small pieces.
Sauté the onions and other onions until fragrant, then add the chopped smoked beef.
Add milk and grated cheese, stirring until well combined. Add the cornstarch mixture and stir until well combined. Cook until thickened and no longer runny.
Flatten dough A, then flatten dough B on top of it, fold into a small shape, and flatten again.
Cut into several small pieces, then take one piece and flatten it.
Add the filling, fold again, and seal the dough. Repeat until finished. Brush with egg yolk until it looks appealing, then add smoked beef slices on top
Bake the cake in the oven for approximately 60 minutes using top and bottom heat at 180 degrees Celsius. Bake until fully cooked.
Results
Look at this, it's so beautiful and attractive to serve at any event. Just like savory bread, the taste is perfect for selling, and enjoying it with a cold drink at home will surely give you a different bread experience.
Its savory, salty flavor and soft, layered texture are reminiscent of the bolen sold in bakeries. I’m thrilled that my smoked beef bolen turned out perfectly. As usual, enjoy it right out of the oven while it’s still warm—it’s absolutely delicious.
