It's not easy to write and read about rape, this is how I want to start reviewing this book, a book that I had to put aside for a long time and read in pieces because it was definitely too raw and painful, a real punch in the stomach especially knowing that it is a true story. The writer Neige Sinno has written a lucid analysis of one of the most terrible events that can happen to a person, rape by her stepfather who abused her for many years. It's not a spoiler but a small consolation to know that fortunately he was punished and put on trial for what he did but that won't take away the harm he caused. Neige tries to analyze what happened to her in a detached way but also places herself in a very complex point of view, that of the rapist, what led her stepfather to do what he did? What did he feel? How did he feel? The book is not a light read, explicit and detailed language and description are often used, details which I would define as disgusting but which it is right that you have described to make the reader understand the full extent of the disgust he has suffered from his monster stepfather.

To help with writing there are many references to other authors such as Nobokov and Annie Ernaux and to psychological theses and theories, in certain chapters it seems more like a work of non-fiction than an autobiography, I think it helps the author to maintain a certain detachment and to help herself write about such a difficult topic. It is a hard, sad book, it leaves you with great bitterness but this is precisely its beauty, making the reader involved but also external observer of this painful event, the author retraces her childhood before the abuse, during, both adolescence and the moment in which she finally confesses everything up to the trial with all its bureaucracy and uncomfortable questions, it is impressive how the author manages to write and evoke certain details without revealing anger or disgust which, however, are emotions that she inevitably triggers in the reader. It is not a book that I recommend to everyone, especially sensitive people but I understand why it has been very successful, it is a small masterpiece and a very strong testimony.
