I'm going to call the “Monster” just like they do with the bull… Adan
I had high hopes for this book, but I didn’t think it would turn out the way it did. I’d always thought of this story as a horror tale, but as I read the book, I realized how wrong I was. It does have scenes that describe horrific acts, but beyond that, we can see how innocence turns to violence through the eyes of a remarkable character. Adam starts out like a baby—he doesn’t know how to speak or how to behave.
He seeks help and understanding from his creator, but the creator now sees him as a large, ugly creature whom he does not want; he detests him and regrets having created him, for now that Adam has committed atrocities, Victor believes he is nothing more than a murderous monster.
The book has passages that I really liked, such as these:
The events that decisively influence our destinies often have their origins in trivial occurrences
My God…! Why does man boast of having more sensitivity than beasts? That only makes them more needy beings. If our impulses were reduced to hunger, thirst, and desire, we could almost be free; but we find ourselves tossed about by every wind and by every word spoken almost at random or by every landscape that wind might suggest to us. We sleep, and a dream is capable of poisoning our rest. We wake, and a fleeting thought embitters our day. We feel, imagine, or reason; we laugh or weep, embrace cherished sorrows, or cast aside our troubles; it matters not; for whether joy or sorrow, the path of their departure is always open. A person’s yesterday can never be like their tomorrow; nothing can last, except for change itself!
And even if our affection for them is not due specifically to extraordinary qualities, our childhood friends always exert a certain influence on our spirit—an influence that a friend we make later in life can hardly match. They know our childhood feelings, which, although they may change over time, never disappear entirely; and they can judge our actions with greater impartiality. A sister or brother can never suspect that the other is deceiving or lying to them, unless such behavior has actually occurred in one of them previously; whereas another friend, even if they hold us in high regard, may feel, even against their will, the pang of suspicion.
After finishing the book, I watched Guillermo del Toro’s movie, and while I liked it overall, I feel like there were small changes that made a big difference. I partly understand why they did it—the movie is already long enough, and if they had followed the original story, it would have been even longer—but in any case, I still stand by the saying, “The book is better.”
Even though I don’t think I’ll count this book among my favorites, I’m giving it a 5/5.
