I met by pure chance this Italian writer like me, Marcello Simoni, unfortunately I only discovered after reading his book that he had been in my city for a literature festival. Marcello Simoni writes a particular kind of book of medieval thrillers, the one I am reviewing today is the second in a series dedicated to Ignatius of Toledo a fictional character, a Mozarab relic market that travels the world in search of books and rare and sacred objects. In this book Ignatius is not looking for a book but a woman Bianca of Castile, kidnapped by the terrible and unknown Count of Nigredo and said to be held captive in the castle of Airagne a dark place where alchemy and perhaps even black magic are practiced. Ignatius leaves for his journey separating from his beloved son Umberto, engaged in another mission, the recovery of a secret and dangerous book the thurba philosoparum that many are looking for. Ignazio leaves to save Bianca of Castile but not alone with him there is the disturbing character of Lucignano a man who seems very religious, perhaps too much and also dark and with other traveling companions. Ignazio is a man of the world he is thirsty for knowledge and during his journey curiosity will push him to try to understand what is hidden inside the kidnapping of Bianca and what really happens to Airagne, a name that just by invoking it evokes terror.

Lamentablemente, solo descubrí tras leer su libro que había estado en mi ciudad para un festival literario. Marcello Simoni escribe un tipo particular de novela de suspense medieval. La que reseñamos hoy es la segunda de una serie dedicada a Ignacio de Toledo, un personaje ficticio, un mozárabe comerciante de reliquias que recorre el mundo en busca de libros y objetos raros y sagrados. En este libro, Ignacio no busca un libro, sino a una mujer, Blanca de Castilla, secuestrada por el terrible y desconocido conde de Nigredo, quien, según se dice, está cautiva en el castillo de Airagne, un lugar oscuro donde se practica la alquimia y quizás incluso la magia negra.
Ignacio emprende su viaje separándose de su amado hijo Humberto, comprometido en otra misión: la recuperación de un libro secreto y peligroso, la Thurba Philosoparum, que muchos buscan. Ignazio parte para salvar a Bianca de Castilla, pero no solo con él está el inquietante personaje de Lucignano, un hombre que parece muy religioso, quizás demasiado, y también oscuro, con otros compañeros de viaje. Ignazio es un hombre de mundo, sediento de conocimiento, y durante su viaje, la curiosidad lo impulsará a intentar comprender qué se esconde tras el secuestro de Bianca y qué le sucede realmente a Airagne, un nombre que con solo mencionarlo evoca terror.
The few who survive Airagne seem to be afflicted by a strange disease almost madness or demonic possession. However, Ignatius will not have an easy journey, there will be many obstacles between him and Airagne, some henchmen called archons will try to stop them with their dark drapes but even in their own group there will be those who will try to kill him and hinder him in his mission, his son's journey will not be easy either, many enemies will meet but also allies. If you are passionate about the Middle Ages I recommend it but also if you are fascinated by ancient heresies, because it is not just a banal thriller but it also talks about the extermination of the Cathars, the Albigensians, Gnostocism and obviously the alchemical mysteries. This novel catapults us into another epic of superstition, battles, mysteries and betrayals! An excellent medieval thriller that will not disappoint you!
Los pocos que sobreviven a Airagne parecen estar afligidos por una extraña enfermedad, casi locura o posesión demoníaca. Sin embargo, Ignacio no tendrá un camino fácil; habrá muchos obstáculos entre él y Airagne. Algunos secuaces, llamados arcontes, intentarán detenerlos con sus oscuras vestiduras, pero incluso dentro de su propio grupo habrá quienes intentarán matarlo y obstaculizar su misión. El viaje de su hijo tampoco será fácil: encontrará muchos enemigos, pero también aliados. Si te apasiona la Edad Media, te lo recomiendo, pero también si te fascinan las herejías antiguas, porque no es solo un thriller banal, sino que también habla del exterminio de los cátaros, los albigenses, el gnostocismo y, por supuesto, los misterios alquímicos. ¡Esta novela nos catapulta a otra epopeya de superstición, batallas, misterios y traiciones! ¡Un excelente thriller medieval que no te decepcionará!
