Spoiler Alert ‼️
Hi, friends of the Hive Book Club… I’m happy to be here. This is my first time writing a book review, and I hope to post many more, since I’ve read quite a few over the past year and this current one.
Hola, amigos del Club de Lectura Hive… Me da mucho gusto estar aquí.
Today I want to talk to you about a book that had a profound impact on me: The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. From the moment I was given it as a gift, I was thrilled, because those of us who love to read know that a good book not only transports you to other worlds, but also stirs you deep inside, awakens your critical thinking, and opens your eyes to realities we often can’t even imagine.
The story begins in Kabul in the 1970s, a time full of life and traditions before everything fell apart due to conflict. There we meet Amir and Hassan, two boys who grow up practically together but are separated by a huge social barrier: Amir comes from a wealthy and respected family, while Hassan is his Hazara servant, a heavily discriminated-against minority. In his desperation to prove to his father that he is now a man and to earn his pride, Amir takes advantage of Hassan’s unconditional devotion and commits an act of betrayal that will mark his destiny forever. From there, the story becomes a harrowing journey through guilt, memory, and the value of true friendship.
Something that captivated me from the start was seeing how the author portrays that stark class divide—an unjust reality that, sadly, we still see in the world today. Even with those differences, the affection between the two families felt very genuine. What hurt me the most was seeing how lonely Amir was without Hassan—he was surrounded only by rich, cruel, and snobbish kids. It’s so easy to feel anger toward certain aspects of Amir’s behavior, but I also understood his vulnerable side: he was just an insecure child, shaped by a toxic environment and obsessed with winning his father’s approval.
Even so, when the moment of betrayal came, it broke my heart. Seeing that Amir didn’t defend his friend and then falsely accused him of theft to shift the blame away from himself was something I found incredibly hard to forgive him for—especially given the pure and painful loyalty Hassan had for him.
From there, the book takes a dramatic turn with the arrival of the Taliban and the fall of Kabul. Reading about the war, the fear, and the families forced to flee their own homeland had a profound impact on me, especially when I realized that Afghanistan’s suffering remains a very real reality today.
When Amir and his father manage to escape and start over in the United States, the story offers moments of great tenderness. Watching them leave their luxurious lifestyle behind to make it on their own together creates a beautiful bond between father and son. Amir manages to find love and rebuild his life, but dealing with his father’s illness and the constant guilt of having left Hassan behind in such a dangerous environment never gives him peace.
The ending moved me to the core. When Amir returns to a Kabul in ruins, I had to pause my reading several times to process so much sadness. Discovering Hassan’s fate hurt me deeply, but what kept me hooked was seeing that life isn’t black and white and that there’s always a chance for redemption. Seeing a mature Amir risk everything to rescue and care for Hassan’s son was the purest way to heal that wound and earn the forgiveness he’d been seeking so desperately.
The Kite Runner is a powerful and heart-wrenching book, but amid all the pain, it leaves a radiant light of nobility, love, and hope. If you decide to read it, get ready for a roller coaster of emotions. I hope you enjoyed this review, and I’ll see you for the next book!
_El final me conmovió profundamente.
