Heathcliff is an orphan boy who arrives at the Earnshaw household, where the head of the family welcomes him as a son. The Earnshaws have two children: Catherine, who gets along quite well with Heathcliff, and Hindley, who detests him and constantly humiliates him. Over time, Catherine and Heathcliff develop an attraction to each other; they are in love, but Catherine marries Edgar Linton—driven more by a desire for status and protection than by love—leaving a humiliated Heathcliff to depart. Years later, he returns, seeking revenge.

It retains all the characteristic elements of Gothic literature, evident not only in the misty, untamed landscapes but also in the deranged state of the protagonist, who descends ever deeper into a darkness that increasingly consumes him.
La narrativa de la obra es muy interesante pues muestra un sistema de relatos enmarcados, esdecir, narración dentro de la narración, y en algunas ocasiones se incorporan cartas y diarios, ofreciendo puntos de vista multiples de los hechos, mantiene tocos los elementos característicos de la literatura gótica, los cuales se evidencian en los paisajes brumosos y salvajes, pero también en la actitud insana del propio protagonista quién cada vez se va sumiendo en su propia oscuridad que lo consume cada vez más.
True to the spirit of Gothic literature, the characters are unconventional—far from what might be considered politically correct. On the contrary, they are dark and somber; they possess flaws and act impulsively, at times even hitting rock bottom in their own moral, emotional, or spiritual decay. Yet, these lived experiences ultimately serve as a path toward learning and redemption.
Siendo fiel a literatura gótica, los personajes son diferentes a lo acostumbrados, no son para nada lo que se consideraría como politicamente correctos, al contrario, son oscuros, sombríos, tienen defectos y actúan de manera impulsiva, llegando incluso a tocar ondo en su propia decadencia moral,sentimental o espiritual, sin enbargo las experiencias vividas le sirven como medio de aprendizaje y redención.
