Blanco y Negro Recortes Halloween Presentación (16_9).jpg

In 1958, a group of marginalized children forms an organization they call the "Losers' Club." This group conducts—amateur, of course—investigations into a series of murders in their town; it all begins following the murder of the younger brother of Bill, one of the children in the group. They soon discover that the cause of these deaths is not human, but supernatural: a strange, ancient being capable of taking the form of one's worst nightmare, which awakens every 27 years to feed. They manage to defeat it—or so it seems. However, 27 years later, in 1985, the members of the club reunite as adults. They must return to the town upon realizing that "It" has awakened and unleashed terror once again.

Although I am not particularly fond of the horror genre, I thoroughly enjoyed this book because it does not deal with conventional horror; rather, it explores fear itself. Fear is an ambiguous emotion—it can keep you safe, but it can also be overly restrictive. This creature represents fear incarnate; fear can devour you—consume you completely—if you allow it to, and it only weakens in the face of your determination. In this novel, the children (who later grow into adults) embody that very drive and spirit, as well as the teamwork required to overcome adversity. Courage does not consist of the absence of fear, but rather the capacity to confront it, regardless of the consequences.

Another thing I like about the book is that it’s not just about fear, but also about friendship. These children come together because they have a need for affection and support; they are all marginalized in some way—suffering at home or at school—sometimes for completely opposite reasons (such as neglect or overprotection). Ultimately, however, they manage to understand and communicate with one another. They are the most capable of grasping what is truly happening in the town; possessing a deep sense of empathy, they take it upon themselves to act against the strange, malevolent force that is shattering the town’s peace.
