Beige Scrapbook Being Empathetic Presentation (1).jpg

Bruno is a German boy and the son of none other than the commandant of Auschwitz—the German Empire's largest concentration and extermination camp. For Bruno, the move represents a change that is not merely significant but traumatic—at least from the perspective of a child who was once surrounded by friends in Berlin. However, in his new home—surrounded by barbed-wire fences—Bruno has the opportunity to meet Shmuel, another boy like himself but from a different background: Shmuel is Jewish and lives on the other side of the fence, among those who are suffering. Yet, Bruno and Shmuel defy the social norms of their time and setting, forging a beautiful friendship rooted in mutual trust and the innocence of childhood.

Almost the entire book is told from Bruno's perspective; consequently, the author—who, as an adult, fully grasps the situation—perceives events in a more softened light. He is able to sense and even experience the frustration arising from a lack of understanding as to why people are segregated and why everyone must remain on opposite sides of the fence. At times, the story reveals situations of an adult nature that allow us to understand the hypocritical environment in which the concept of Nazism operates.

What moves us most is that, despite the contrast, Bruno and Shmuel show us that for children, there are no limits or prejudices—no hatred or segregation; these are all concepts invented by adults to justify wars and conflicts for their own gain. Human beings are born innocent, but their environment and social conditioning gradually transform them.
