Sadly, my mother-in-law passed away a few days ago due to her advanced age and a bout of pneumonia that proved devastating given her condition; she had been bedridden for about five years and was ready to leave this world, though the family did everything for her during those final years. I am fortunate enough to say that I had the best mother-in-law in the world; I loved her like a mother and she loved me like a daughter, and we always looked out for one another. That is why returning to the town where she lived—and where my family and I lived for a few years—will never be the same; even the beautiful view from our house there seems tinged with gray, as if mourning her, yet we find comfort in knowing she is no longer suffering and is now at rest.
For those who may not know, there is a custom in Venezuela—rooted in both religion and culture—that typically takes place after funerals: the *novenario*. These consist of recitations of the Holy Rosary, organized by Catholics to pray to God for the relief and eternal rest of the deceased. It is called a "*novenario*" because it involves nine rosaries, with one recited each day. We attended three of these prayer sessions and followed the others from home; however, we traveled to the town for "La última noche" (The Last Night)—as the final rosary of the *novenario* is known. The town (named Montalbán) always welcomes us with its unique charm, featuring narrow streets, picturesque houses, and that melancholic air that is part of its appeal.
We arrived early at the chapel assigned for the occasion to finalize the details—specifically, setting up the refreshment table. It is customary to lay out light snacks to be served after the rosary—usually coffee, hot chocolate, and cookies—which was especially welcome given the cold weather caused by the town's recent, constant rains. People really enjoyed the hot chocolate my sister-in-law prepared. This is our way of thanking those who joined us in prayer and offered such great emotional support—something deeply appreciated during these moments of vulnerability.
The chapel looked beautiful and was fully prepared for the service; it was a truly lovely ceremony where we officially and finally said goodbye to our beloved grandmother—whom we affectionately called "Petunia," as she was the flower of the family. My mother-in-law, Mrs. Petra, will live on forever in our hearts; we will never forget her laughter, her tender gaze, her warmth, her wise words, and the kindness that was such an integral part of her. We bade her farewell on earth as she passed into eternity—a goodbye filled with sadness, yet above all with gratitude for the years God allowed us to have her, and with thanks to her for her companionship, her unconditional love, and her eternal blessings.
