This September 14 marks three years since my mother is no longer physically on this beautiful planet. And we miss her very much. We always celebrated her birthdays and loved listening to her stories of her youth.

Even though I went every week to visit her, because we didn't live together, I had the blessing of accompanying her during her last three years, because my father was ill. I never thought back then that after he passed, she would gradually refuse to eat, and that, five months later, brought about her end.

At the time of her death, my mother suffered from senile dementia, but she was very calm. Sometimes she had strong crises because she didn't like taking her medications and would throw them away, but those times were few.

Now I understand very well the saying: "A child you are, a parent one day you'll be," because I see myself reflected in my children with their stubbornness — I was stubborn too. Although sometimes they are right because I can't know everything, it really is very annoying.

My mother adored perfumes, talcum powders, creams, and she would never in a million years let anyone see her gray hairs 😂 — the latter is something I don't give any importance to. For nothing in the world would my mother skip bathing, not even during the crises of her illness.

From her I also have the habit of whistling. I had a mother-in-law who always criticized me for it, but I learned it from my mother, who would spend hours singing and whistling. When she was in her final days, I would hug her, and while I tried to feed her with a dropper, I would sing her songs from her era, the ones she always sang.

alt

Now sometimes I catch myself singing her entire repertoire while doing chores — songs by Benny Moré, Vicentico Valdés, Tejedor, El Puma, Manolo del Valle, Barbarito Diez, Omara Portuondo, Jorge Negrete, Carlos Gardel, La Orquesta Aragón, and other musicians.

She also sang jingles from commercials from the fifties for Jabón Candado, Jabón Rina, and many more that I no longer remember.

Since I was twenty-one and began my working life, I always made sure to support my parents at home. At twenty-five I left home to live with the father of my children, but I never stopped buying her the most essential things, talking with her, and staying on top of her food and medicines. That is what I have instilled in my children when it comes to love for family.

Parents are a treasure — we must take care of them and tell them how much we love them, because tomorrow it may be too late. I hope that wherever she is, she knows that she did a good job with her children and grandchildren, since she never stopped protecting us and loving us. As a mother, her work was wonderful. We will never forget her.
