On my walk today through the streets of Havana, I was struck by the rubble of what remained of the Higher Institute of Design (ISDI), located on Belascoain Street, in the Centro Habana municipality.

After getting home, I set out to search Google for some photos of what this building once was, and I learned that the building was used for multiple purposes since its inauguration in 1860.

Originally, it had only two floors. During the colonial era, it was inaugurated as a Military Hotel and Officers' Club. Between 1874 and 1878, it was used as a Cadet School. By 1878, it became an Asylum for the Widows and Orphans of Spanish officers killed in the Ten Years' War (1868–1878), and during the First U.S. Occupation (1898–1902), the building served as the headquarters of the occupying troops' General Staff. From 1913, it was the seat of the Secretariat of Health and Charity. The third floor of the building was built in the 1930s. In 1940, it became the headquarters of the Ministry of Health and Social Assistance.

From 1959, that Ministry became known as the Ministry of Public Health. Between 1965 and 1982, the building served as the headquarters of several educational institutions. In 1982, it became the headquarters of the Polytechnic Institute for Industrial Design (IPDI).

On May 28, 1984, it was established as the Higher Institute of Industrial Design. In the 2010s, it was renamed the Higher Institute of Design, keeping the same acronym and now including the Visual Communication Design degree program.

In 2022, it closed its doors. Specialists noted that multiple modifications made to the property, such as the addition of two new levels and a theater, overloaded the original structure, in addition to the lack of maintenance of a facility more than 165 years old.

It had several partial collapses on July 9, 2024, January 5, 2025, and the last one on February 10, 2026, when it was demolished in its entirety and its headquarters was moved to another building in the Miramar area.

It is very painful to see, not only this collapse, but that of many buildings that have a beautiful history and were not preserved to continue giving them good use for the community. I hope you enjoyed learning a little about this history as much as I did. Greetings 🤗🫶🏾

Saludos 🤗🫶🏾
