I started around 9 in the morning, on a cool day that was perfect for getting to know a bit of Old Havana, its streets, its colonial structures, and its people.

This road is called Paseo del Prado, which leads directly to the majestic Capitolio. Without a doubt, it's a guaranteed photograph along the way. This work is extremely important in Cuba: it holds information about the independence wars, meeting rooms, the chamber of representatives, and much more, which would be a post dedicated to fully experiencing it. Likewise, it is named by some experts as one of the six most relevant palaces in the world.

Just a few meters from the Capitolio is the Saratoga hotel, which I show you below. Days before its inauguration, an explosion caused by a gas leak shook the place, leaving a toll of 47 dead and several injured. In response, a massive search and rescue operation was carried out that lasted for several days.

It was a very sad event for the island, which plunged the country into days of silence and national mourning. Additionally, the explosion affected several facades in the area, including a school, a church, and the Martí Theater, since the hotel was only 4 days away from its reopening.

Going deeper into the historic center, a fascinating mix of architectural styles appears before us: the Provincial People's Court, the Gran Hotel, and the Museum of Boats.

Sights that captivate and at the same time make me sad because of the country's current situation, its economy, the intense blackouts lasting several hours, the lack of water and food. But it surprises me that at least still going out and clearing your mind in the capital cheers you up a bit from the daily work and stress of everyday life.

Another place that caught my eye was the Russian Orthodox Holy Cathedral of Our Lady of Kazan, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and constituting a new cultural bridge between countries.

The majesty projected by the facade of the white temple invites us to go inside, on San Pedro Street where the main entrance is located, which leads to the three sections into which the building is divided: the sanctuary, the bell tower, and the ecclesiastical headquarters. They say it was assembled at the Trinity-St. Sergius Monastery by Russian master sculptors, who used gold as the only material.

Another large-scale temple in the historic center is El Templete, a neoclassical monument located in the Plaza de Armas, inaugurated in 1828, which commemorates the definitive settlement in 1519 of San Cristóbal de La Habana, near the Port of Carenas.

It marks the site where the first ceiba tree stood and where, under its shade, the first mass and the first municipal council were held. It is customary for Havanans and visitors to walk around the ceiba tree three times, counterclockwise, and make a wish.

The old and luxurious Presidential Palace, currently the Museum of the Revolution, is undergoing structural remodeling, but I'll tell you that it is a beautiful 20th-century building used by several presidents of Cuba, including Fulgencio Batista.

Inside, important historical events and processes that occurred in the country are displayed, from the Granma Memorial to valuable historical objects linked to the liberation war and the subsequent battles of the Cuban people in defense of their sovereignty and independence.

Walking north, we will find the Bacardí Building, considered the first building in the 'art déco' style constructed in Havana. It was erected in 1930 to house the offices of the Bacardí company. At the time, it was the tallest building in Cuba; its facade is covered in red Bavarian granite and at its peak it has a bat, the symbol of Bacardí.

All the original furnishings are still preserved both inside and outside the building, currently occupied by national and foreign companies, although it is already a bit worn by the passage of time since its manufacture.

Continuing this walk, we come across the guardians of Paseo del Prado, some lions made of bronze to watch over this famous park. Their construction dates back to 1772, when our Island was one of the most flourishing Spanish colonies in America.

It features several trees and marble benches, which have witnessed loves, encounters, partings, children's games, and even many celebrations held at the Palace of Marriages. Very close by is also located the Universal Museum of Fine Arts, known as the Palace of the Asturian Center.

We arrive at the Cathedral Square, located in the Plaza of Old Havana, with a Cuban Renaissance-Baroque architectural style, built in the 18th century.

This symbol of opulence and spirituality developed during an era of colonial splendor. It is the seat of the archdiocese in the Capital, exploring its history as a fundamental spiritual and cultural center of Cuba, and it is named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In the historic center, the dwellings should receive as much attention as the buildings. The typical colonial houses feature arcades, windows and doors with wrought-iron grilles, as well as interior courtyards. Many of them show the passage of time, yet they still preserve a remarkable urban coherence. Havana remains the same, travelers: you can visit it again and again, and the only thing that will happen is that it will be increasingly deteriorated. It is a true shame that such a rich island culture is being lost.

Other preserved architectural buildings include La Casa del Marqués de San Felipe y Santiago, a historic building with a Baroque exterior and a minimalist interior; also the Casino Español, a building inspired by Plateresque art.

To finish, there is much more to see and do regarding art and architecture in Havana, because we are talking about an island that, although territorially small, has an artistic potential that is enriched more every day thanks to the preservation of its traditions and quality professional artistic training.

Traveling to Cuba is not just a tourist destination or an open-air museum: it is an inhabited space, in constant tension between memory and everyday life, between conservation and deterioration.
