Many people know this title from the famous 1980s movie, but few know that a book called The Neverending Story actually exists. This story, with its epic and wonderful plot, begins like any other, with a chubby, misunderstood boy named Bastian, who has problems with his father and, to make matters worse, suffers from bullying at school. In an attempt to escape his painful reality, he steals a book from Mr. Koreander's bookstore called The Neverending Story. But as Bastian reads, he realizes something amazing... He is much more involved in the story than he imagined. The fantasy kingdom is literally crumbling because of an invisible but devastating force called "The Nothing." The Childlike Empress needs a new name, and Bastian is the one who can give it to her. By doing so, he crosses the literary barrier, breaks the fourth wall, and is transported to the fantasy world where he becomes a very powerful warrior. However, every time Bastian makes a wish in the fantasy kingdom, he loses a memory in his own world.
Muchas personas conocen este título por la famosa película de los ochenta, pero pocos saben que realmente existe un libro de la Historia Sin Fin. Esta historia con una trama tan épica y maravillosa inicia como cualquier otra, con un niño regordete e incomprendido llamado Bastian, que tiene problemas con su padre y para colmo sufre de acoso escolar, en un intento por evadirse de la realidad tan dolorosa, él roba un libro en la librería del señor Koreander llamado La Historia Sin Fin, pero a medida que Bastian va leyendo se da cuenta de algo impresionante... Ël está involucrado en la lectura mucho más de lo que imagina. Although different, this book reminded me a lot of Narnia, not only because of its epic and fantastical elements, but also because it never bored me. It has a very fast pace from beginning to end, is divided into two parts, and each explores a different side of Bastian. In one, he feels vulnerable and fragile, seeking refuge; in the other, it's the complete opposite: he feels strong, powerful, and proud, and it's there that he begins to lose his essence. This gives us much to think about and analyze, making it a very reflective book. Fragility isn't good for us, but neither should we be overconfident in ourselves. We must recognize that we need others, that we are part of an ecosystem in which the best way to live is to help one another.
Aunque es diferente, este libro me recordó muchísimo a Narnia, no solo por loselementos épicos y fantásticos que tiene, sino porque nunca me aburrió, tiene un ritmo muy movido desde el inicio hasta el final, está dividido en dos parte y cada una de ellas explora una parte diferente de Bastian, en una se siente vulnerable, frágil, busca refugio, en la otra es todo lo contrario, se siente fuerte, poderoso y ufano y es allí donde empieza a perder su escencia, lo cuál nos da mucho para pensar y analizar, así que es un libro muy reflexivo. La fragilidad no nos hace bien, pero tampoco debemos excedernos en la confianza que nos tenemos a nosotros mismos, debemos reconocer que necesitamos de los demás, que formamos parte de un ecosistema en el cuál la mejor manera de vivir es ayudarnos los unos a los otros.
Something that makes the experience even more enriching and fun is that thanks to the magic of Fantasia, Bastian manages to break the literary barrier by entering the story (every reader's dream, although it depends on what they are reading, of course). This makes us identify even more with the character, gives him more personality, and makes him closer to us.
Algo que hace que la experiencia sea aún más enriquecedora y divertida es que gracias a la magia de Fantasia Bastian logra romper la barrera literaria entrando en la historia (el sueño de todo lectr, aunque depende de lo que esté leyendo desde luego) esto hace que nos identifiquemos aún más con el personaje, le da más personalidad y lo vuelve más cercano a nosotros.
On the other hand, I must admit that one of the things I enjoyed most, because I also felt a connection to it, is the concept the author gave to "The Nothing," which we could summarize as that emptiness left by the absence of dreams and illusions, the lack of motivation that often accompanies us in daily life due to work and routines. This begins as a small breeze, but it could become a devastating hurricane, capable of sweeping away even mountains of rock, as happened in Fantasia. And that's because Fantasia and "The Real World" are connected; neither can exist without the other.
Por otra parte debo reconocer que una de las cosas que más disfruté porque también me hizo sentir identifiada, es el concepto que le dio el atuor a "La Nada" la cuál podríamos resumir como ese vacío que deja la ausencia de sueños e ilusiones, la falta de motivaciones que a menudo nos acompañan en la vida cotidiana por causa del trabajo y las rutinas diarias, esto comienza como una pequeña brisa, pero podría llegar a convertirse en un huracán devastador, capaz de arrazar hasta con montañas de roca, como ocurrió en Fantasía. Y es que Fantasía y "El mundo real" están conectados, ninguno puede existir sin el otro.
