¡Hola amigos lectores!
Hello, readers! I hope you're all doing great. Today I want to share my review of the book Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins.
The book is a prequel to the trilogy known as The Hunger Games. In this story, we’ll learn what Haymitch’s life was like before he was chosen as a tribute and taken to the Capitol to fight for his life alongside other tributes—all boys and girls from the 12 districts that once rebelled against the Capitol. Now, the reaping serves as a reminder not to do so again, because every action has consequences. We’ll see a teenage Haymitch foolishly in love with a girl and his desire to give his mother and younger brother a better future. Until the day of the Reaping—which coincides with his birthday—when he is chosen to enter the Games and his dreams shatter. Now he knows that his death is just around the corner, and his mission will be to avoid becoming just another puppet of the Capitol for as long as he can.
This is a story I’ve been meaning to read for ages, but I only got around to it now. Returning to the world of Panem felt very nostalgic. It’s also knowing that you’re going to suffer because this fictional world can be cruel and painful, but I recommend diving into its pages because it’s a story worth reading. The author’s writing style is always so rich, and I love the way she puts her thoughts into words.
Haymitch is a character I was really curious to get to know better. In the main trilogy, he’s already a somewhat arrogant, lazy adult with a drinking problem. However, meeting the teenage Haymitch broke my heart a little because he was a young man full of hope, with a family that loved him and whom he loved, and a girlfriend who made him wake up happy every morning—even on Reaping Day, which also happens to be his birthday. His whole world came crashing down that day, and since he has a rebellious streak, his actions in the Games didn’t go unnoticed—but sooner rather than later, he’ll discover that all his effort was in vain. At least in this instance.
Although I found it quite painful to read at times, I have to confess that I expected something much worse. I mean, it’s cruel and ruthless enough—after all, we’re talking about a government that, every year, selects one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 from each of the 12 districts to go to the Capitol and fight for their lives in the arena. There can be only one winner; death awaits the rest—that’s tragic enough on its own. On top of that, this book is set during the 50th Hunger Games, and there are twice as many tributes from each district, so everything is even more devastating. But I feel like some things went unnoticed. Instead, the story ended up focusing on Haymitch and his mission.
I went into the book knowing I shouldn't get attached to any of the characters because most of them don't end up okay, but it was impossible not to grow fond of some of them. Especially Maysilee—I loved her sense of humor, and she was the one who made me laugh the most. And little Ampert—it’s not that I grew particularly attached to him, but I think he was one of the characters whose fate hurt me the most because of the horrifying way everything unfolded. I won’t go into details, but I’m sure you can imagine.
I was also happy to reconnect with old characters who are part of the main trilogy. I loved the teenage version of Effie Trinket; when she entered the scene, I was able to understand a little better her relationship with the adult Haymitch and everything they went through. She’s just another puppet of the Capitol, but at least she showed awareness and a certain degree of humility and empathy toward the other residents. She’s a good character.
Well, I liked learning about the background of Haymitch’s story, meeting his love, Lenore, and learning about his life before and after the Games. The ending—the epilogue—also left me feeling more at peace with everything. I won’t say I enjoyed reading it because it’s more of a painful experience than anything else, but I am glad I finally read it. Now all that’s left is to learn President Snow’s story in Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which is the only book I have left and the one I always put off reading because I really dislike this character and I’m not sure if I could stand it, but I’ll give it a try at some point. Anyway, if you haven’t read The Hunger Games, now is a good time to do so.
