Many years ago, I read a novel with an unconventional format, and having recently revisited it, I decided to look into its background. Even the title is unusual—*Shampoo*—as it is a "novelization" written by Robert Alley, based on a screenplay by Robert Towne and Warren Beatty for the 1970s film of the same name. The entire story unfolds over just twenty-four hours in the bustling, chaotic city of Los Angeles, on the eve of the 1968 presidential election. The protagonist, George Roundy, could be described as a gigolo; he leverages his good looks and his career as a hairstylist to engage in affairs with many of the city's wealthy women. George dreams of opening his own beauty salon and striking out on his own, so he turns to a millionaire named Lester Karpf for a financial solution. However, since George is quite the gigolo, he is simultaneously involved with the millionaire's wife and his daughter. You can imagine the hectic life he leads—he even has a girlfriend—while his true love from the past, Jackie, happens to be Lester's mistress. In short, it is a tangled web of romantic entanglements.
Hace muchos años leí una novela que tenía un formato diferente al acostumbrado, y como recientemente volví a leerla me di a la tarea de investigar sobre ella, desde el título es curiosa pues se llama Shampoo, se trata de una "novelización cinematográfica" escrita por Robert Alley basada en un guion escrito por Robert Towne y Warren Beatty para una película del mismo nombre, por allá en los años 70. Toda la novela transcurre en solo veinticuatro horas en la concurrida y caótica ciudad de Los Ángeles en las vísperas de las elecciones presidenciales del año 68. El protagonista de esta historia, George Roundy, es lo que se puede catalogar como un gigoló pues aprovecha su atractivo físico y su profesión de estilista para mantener relaciones con muchas mujeres acaudaladas de la ciudad, George sueña con abrir su propio salón de belleza y dejar de trabajar para otros, así que recurre a un hombre que podría solucionar su problema financiero, un millonario llamado Lester Karpf, pero George, como ya les dije, es un gran gigoló, así que mantiene una relación con la esposa del millonario e incluso con la hija de él, así que imagínense la agitada vida de este hombre que además tiene novia, pero su verdadero amor del pasado, Jackie, es en realidad amante de Lester, es decir, todo un enredo amoroso.
This entire romantic tangle merely exposes the hypocrisy of the seemingly glamorous world of Los Angeles high society, where everything revolves around money and feelings are cast aside; there are no heroes or villains here—nor victims or perpetrators—for everyone has their own sins. Just when the reader begins to pity a character for being deceived, it turns out that character is committing infidelities of their own. Ultimately, everything orbits around money and politics, yet the consequences always fall hardest on the most vulnerable, and there is always someone who loses the most.
Todo este enredo amoroso solo demuestra la hipocresía de ese entorno aparentemente glamuroso de la alta sociedad Angelina, todo se mueve entorno al dinero y los sentimientos quedan a un lado, en esta historia no hay villanos o héroes, tampoco víctimas o victimarios pues todos tienen sus propios pecados, en el momento en que uno como lector compadece a un personaje por ser engañado, resulta que este personaje también comete sus propias infidelidades, y todo en realidad se mueve y orbita al rededor del dinero y la política pero siempre la cuerda revienta por lo más delgado y siempre hay alguien que pierde más.
Amidst all this, hypocrisy and moral cynicism prevail; while politicians and high society—particularly the conservative elite—publicly champion proper conduct, and candidates promise to improve the system while projecting a flawless image of family life and prosperity, the reality is that their core is utterly rotten and corrupted by immorality. Many view money as a panacea, even as they wither away inside or grapple with emotional voids that ultimately weigh heavily upon them.
En medio de esto predomina la hipocresía y el cinismo moral pues mientras los políticos y la alta sociedad promueven en publico un buen comportamiento, sobre todo en la alta elite conservadora, los candidatos hacen promesas para mejorar el sistema y venden una imagen perfecta de familia y bienestar, en realidad su núcleo está totalmente podrido y degenerado por la corrupción y la inmoralidad, muchos ven el dinero como una panacea aunque se estén muriendo por dentro, aunque tengan otras carencias emocionales que al final de cuentas pesa y mucho.
A crucial point to consider in this book is that, although the 1960s promoted sexual freedom in utopian terms, the author reveals the moral and emotional consequences of these uncommitted, free-spirited unions; this "freedom" is merely a façade masking loneliness, sadness, and the lingering void. George, the protagonist, is a man enslaved by his impulses—and, above all, by a pathological need for attention and validation—which ultimately leaves him completely alone.
Algo muy importante a tomar en cuenta en este libro es que a pesar de que en los años 60 se promovía la libertad sexual de una manera utópica, aquí el autor nos muestra las consecuencias morales y emocionales de estas uniones libres y sin compromiso de ningún tipo, la "libertad" no es más que una fachada que oculta la soledad y la tristeza, el vacío que queda después, George, el protagonista es un hombre esclavo de sus impulsos pero sobre todo por esa enfermiza necesidad de atención y valoración, lo cuál lo deja completamente solo.
