When the house you live in is relatively small, it can be tricky to move the furniture around to freshen up the spaces; however, with a little ingenuity, you can make changes that give your home a whole new vibe.

I’ve always loved rearranging the furniture at home, moving beds around, and adding decorations or accents that visually refresh different corners of the house. But since I rent—and the lease prohibits hammering nails into the walls or making any modifications—it’s a bit more complicated. Still, we found a way around it and are happy with the result.

The apartment where I live has only one bedroom, and although it made sense for my children to share that space, their refusal to do so led one of them to decide to sleep in the living room, while the youngest sleeps in the bedroom with me—even though this causes some discomfort for both of us. Still, we’re grateful that, for the most part, we have a place to stay while we look for better rental options.

So the issue is how to give the person outside the bedroom a space with some privacy, while also making sure you don’t see a bed sticking out in the middle of the living room. Even though we don’t have guests, having a bed outside the bedroom still bothered me visually whenever I came home, so I got to work to make the furniture look more harmonious and ensure nothing looked out of place.

The best part is that I had my kids’ help—they were excited at first, until I told them it wasn’t just about moving things around, but that we also had to clean up. In the end, though, I was the one who did the cleaning, while they took care of making the changes under my guidance.

First, we divided the living-dining room (and makeshift bedroom) with a chest of drawers, which created a visual separation and also separated the social area from my son’s space, which was where his computer is now.

We placed both units close together so the modem signal would be stronger for both of us, although the idea of putting the laptop on the cabinet with wheels—since that’s my “office”—and being able to take it into the bedroom allows me to move it when my son invites his friends over to play on his computer or wants to be alone in his space.

And even though I still have a lot of things to buy and fix up, having the space laid out better has helped me give the house a different feel, and it’s easier to move around now—before, it felt like everything was crammed into one spot.
