I’ve been meaning to replace my everyday sneakers for a while now—in fact, I mentioned it in a post a few months ago—but between inflation, my low salary, rising rent and utility bills, and my children’s urgent needs, this always ends up falling to the bottom of my list of priorities.

But the same thing happens every time I need to replace my sneakers: the ones I have now fell apart, and honestly, I looked like a homeless person wearing them—which makes me feel not only helpless but also gives me a kind of urge to skip everything else on my list and treat myself to something nice.

So today, when I had to go pay off the balance on a pair I’d bought for my youngest son, I decided I’d try on a few pairs for myself and take advantage of the fact that I can buy them on credit—which, even though I don’t really like using it, is an option for those of us who are just scraping by day to day.

The problem with me is that I’m pretty indecisive when it comes to buying shoes—it’s been a “problem” ever since I started making my own shopping decisions, to the point that my mother decided, back when I was a teenager, that it was better to just give me the money and let me wander on my own through all the shoe stores in downtown to find the perfect pair.

I was looking for the models I’d seen on a previous visit, but I couldn’t find them, so I had to start my search from scratch. Maybe it’s a matter of maturity or managing my time better, but I managed to find some that I liked and that fit my budget—even though I was going to pay for them on credit, I still needed to have the down payment ready to take them home.

I bought them a size larger than I usually wear, since I plan to get orthotic insoles made so I don’t have those sharp pains after working on my feet for many hours. I also hope that they’ll correct my gait so my sneakers don’t keep wearing out in the same spots all the time.

What did you think of my selection? I loved it, especially because it had been a while since I’d bought sneakers I liked without worrying about whether they were the cheapest ones. I still don’t know how I’ll manage to pay them off, but as the ad for a famous credit card says: “There are some things money can’t buy; for everything else, there’s…” In this case, you do buy them with money, but what you can’t buy is the sense of self-worth I’ve been working on for a long time.
