Although until last year I celebrated on both dates (Venezuela鈥檚 and Argentina鈥檚), this year I only celebrated on one鈥攖he one where I live鈥攚hich was last Sunday, more out of consideration for my children鈥檚 daily lives than out of any real desire to celebrate, since we don鈥檛 do anything in particular, and certainly not because that鈥檚 the day I鈥檓 busiest at work.
My youngest son, who鈥檚 the most thoughtful, was disappointed that he didn鈥檛 have enough money to give me the gift he wanted, but with the little he managed to save up, I bought two things I鈥檇 been wanting to try, so I took the money and bought them鈥攂ut not before emphasizing to him that a gift is a sign of love, not an obligation per se, and teaching him that when giving a gift, it鈥檚 always better to pay attention to what the other person wants or needs, rather than focusing on expensive items that might not interest the recipient.
It might sound like I鈥檓 always lecturing my children, but I prefer to use situations that cause them conflict as examples and help them see things from a different perspective. That way, not only do they feel reassured, but they also learn to resolve dilemmas they might face in the future without falling into despair. Life really is simple, and anyone who tries to complicate it for you shouldn鈥檛 be in your life.
Early in the morning, my oldest son and I left for my job; the younger one stayed home with the task of doing the housework. Up until then, I hadn鈥檛 received a single congratulatory message, but later on, the facts spoke for themselves. When we finished our shift, my son bought ravioli and cheese for lunch鈥攚hich, although I prepared it myself, didn鈥檛 cost me any money.
Back home, all the chores were done, so I just cooked a delicious lunch and then rested all afternoon鈥攚hich was truly the best gift of all!
And the chocolates shown in the photos in this post were a gift from my supervisor at work鈥攖hey weren鈥檛 just for me, but a little treat to share at home: one a day for the kids as a snack and one for me as a daily token of appreciation for any extraordinary task I鈥檇 completed.
