Luzia was starting another diet. Her constant struggle with being overweight was taking a toll not only on her health but also on her self-esteem. She wasn’t obese, but she wasn’t in shape either, and every time she looked in the mirror, she felt bad about what she saw.
She had joined a gym, which she attended early in the morning three times a week, and although at first she always ended up not wanting to go back, she forced herself to return within 48 hours, since she had paid the monthly fee and didn’t want to waste the money she’d invested.
One day during her workout, she met a really nice instructor; she signed up for his cardio classes, daring to get on a stationary bike for the first time in many years—and even though it was stationary, she hadn’t pedaled even in her dreams since she was a child—but she was motivated by the chance to see the cute guy who greeted her when she arrived at the gym.
As the months went by, she began to feel better about herself, and she had renewed her gym membership because she enjoyed the exercise, the company of people who were on the same wavelength as her, and the instructor, with whom she had become friends—even going out a couple of times with him and the whole class group.
She also got used to the recommended diet: fruits and vegetables over carbohydrates and fats. Seeing her go to the farmers’ market every week to stock up was a common sight for those who ran into her on Sunday mornings, and her expression—instead of being tired and listless—was quite the opposite.
Her neighbor said she hadn’t seen her so happy in a long time.
Flavio, the instructor, was the one tracking her progress, and after three months of workouts, he congratulated her on being much closer to the weight and body measurements she had set as her goals. Luzia blushed at the compliment, and he immediately noticed her reaction.
After that, Luzia avoided making eye contact during classes; she would enter and leave the gym without socializing much, as she feared being the subject of comments—or worse, getting into an awkward conversation.
It was at the Sunday farmers’ market that she ran into Flavio, who was also stocking up on fruit there. This wasn’t unusual, since almost all fitness enthusiasts went there to buy very fresh organic produce at a good price. On more than one occasion, they joked that the group’s workout routines took place right there.
After finishing their rounds, Flavio invited Luzia to grab a coffee and offered to carry her groceries in his car so she wouldn’t have to go home first. She hesitated a little, but then figured that since they’d already gone out as a group, there wouldn’t be any problem with people seeing her alone with him—especially the gossipy old ladies in the neighborhood, who were determined to find her a husband, but one of their own choosing.
They arrived at a new café, located on a corner in the city center. The decor was French-style, and although she was wearing casual clothes, she didn’t feel out of place, since Flavio was dressed similarly.
They ordered two coffees, and he wanted to add two chocolate cookies to go with them. She immediately reminded him about her diet, but Flavio asked her to accept it as a small reward for all her accomplishments: just once a year… it won’t hurt you.
Since he was her trainer and knew the ins and outs of nutrition and exercise, she relaxed about it and agreed to have one—even if it was just a little—since she really had worked hard all that time.
A very young waitress arrived with the two coffees and the two chocolate-covered cookies on a turquoise tray that he thought was pretty “cute,” just like the rest of the café’s decor. And even though it wasn’t customary, he suggested they toast with their coffee—to a healthy life—clinking their cups before taking their first sip.
They chatted for a while, and she tried to avoid the cookie, but when he had already finished his, the question came up: “Are you going to turn down your instructor’s gift? Look how generous I’m being here,” he said, smiling mischievously at his own comment. Luzia broke off a piece and, hesitantly, ate it, fearing this might end up being a misstep on her path to radically changing her habits.
The taste, the texture, and the emotions that this bite evoked in her were sublime, to the point that she took another one almost immediately, wearing the expression of a mischievous little girl who’d just done something she shouldn’t have.
But the excitement was short-lived; not even 15 minutes had passed when she began to feel intense itching all over her body, and her breathing became labored. Just then, Flavio had gone to the bathroom and she was alone at the table, so when he came back, he saw her completely red, with her skin covered in tiny red spots and having great difficulty breathing.
They called 911 for an ambulance, while he performed the Heimlich maneuver, thinking she had choked, but he couldn’t get her to cough anything up. They searched her cell phone for any information about her medical history, but that entire section was blank, so when the paramedics arrived, they had to proceed by process of elimination to help her.
Once at the hospital, they were able to access her medical records and discovered that she was allergic to peanuts—which happened to be one of the ingredients in the cookie. Luzia ended her days lying slender in a coffin, with a broken heart—not from love, but from an allergic reaction that led to cardiac failure.
Meanwhile, Flavio—and that pretty girl from the café—got away with giving this Snow White a new poisoned apple; she had no prince to save her at the end of the story.
