On Saturday afternoons, I like to spend some time taking care of the plants in my home. I don't always do the same thing. Sometimes they need watering, other times I clean their leaves because they have collected dust, and from time to time I prune a branch that has already dried out. They are simple tasks that don't take too much time, but when I start with one plant, I end up looking at the others and discovering something I hadn't noticed during the week.

Los sábados por la tarde me gusta dedicar un rato a las plantas de la casa. No siempre hago lo mismo. Algunas veces toca regarlas, otras limpiarles las hojas porque han acumulado polvo y, de vez en cuando, podar alguna rama que ya está seca. Son tareas sencillas que no necesitan demasiado tiempo, pero cuando empiezo con una planta termino mirando las otras y descubriendo alguna cosa que no había notado durante la semana.
There is something special about taking care of something alive, perhaps because it cannot directly tell you what it needs. A plant is not going to come and remind me that its soil is dry or ask me to move it closer to the window. I have to observe it and pay attention to it. A leaf changing color, a branch leaning, soil that is too dry, or a new leaf beginning to appear are small signs that I am learning to understand. It is a kind of conversation, even though neither side uses words.

And maybe that is why I like it. Plants are in no hurry to explain anything to us. They don't need to demand our attention all the time. They are simply there, growing, and we have to learn to observe them.

When I water them, I don't expect them to have completely changed a few hours later. If I clean their leaves, I don't expect them to be full of flowers the next day either. Some things take time and don't respond to our impatience. We can do our part, take care of them, give them water, find a suitable place for them and give them the attention they need, but after that, we have to wait.

That makes me wonder how difficult it is for us to accept the same thing in our own lives. We are used to wanting quick results. We want to learn something quickly, solve a problem quickly, see changes quickly. Even when we do something good for ourselves, many times we want to immediately check whether it is working. A plant, on the other hand, does not allow that kind of pressure. You can do everything correctly and still have to wait.

Queremos aprender algo rápidamente, solucionar un problema rápidamente, ver cambios rápidamente. There are plants that seem to remain the same for weeks and then, almost suddenly, a new leaf appears. You look at it and think that it must have been growing for days, we simply couldn't see it yet. I like that idea because the same thing can happen to us. Sometimes we think we are stuck because we don't see results, when perhaps something is slowly changing inside.

I also know that taking care of something does not mean controlling it. I can take care of a plant, but I cannot decide exactly when it will bloom. I can give it good conditions, but I cannot force it to grow faster. It has its own way of doing things and its own season.

That makes me think about how often we want to rush processes that need their own time. We want some things to arrive before they are ready to arrive. We get impatient because we still don't see an answer, a change or a result, without considering that perhaps we are still in a stage that is also necessary.

That is why a simple afternoon among plants can end up being much more than a household chore. While I carefully clean a leaf or check the soil in a pot, I am also practicing something that doesn't always come easily to me: patience.

I am not talking about perfect patience. There are days when I also want things to happen quickly. But plants remind me that not everything depends on speed. Some things need constant attention and slow results. Others simply need us not to stop taking care of them.
No hablo de una paciencia perfecta. Hay días en los que también quiero que las cosas sucedan rápido. Pero las plantas me recuerdan que no todo depende de la velocidad. Algunas cosas necesitan atención constante y resultados lentos. Otras necesitan simplemente que no dejemos de cuidarlas.
Maybe that is why I like that little Saturday moment so much. There is no goal to accomplish or number of plants to finish within a certain amount of time. I am just there, observing, touching the soil, removing a dry leaf and seeing how they are doing. For a few minutes, the rhythm of the house changes.

A plant doesn't know how many things we have pending, how many messages we haven't answered or what plans we have for tomorrow. It doesn't care whether we made a lot of progress today or very little. It simply follows its own process.

Perhaps that is one of the most beautiful things we can learn from them: that growing doesn't always mean moving forward quickly. Sometimes growing means staying, putting down roots, waiting, adapting and making the most of the conditions we have.

When I finish, I look at the plants and almost always find some small sign of life that I hadn't seen before. A new leaf, a tiny sprout, a branch that has turned toward the light. It is not something spectacular, but that is precisely why I like it. It reminds me that many of the important things happen this way, slowly.

Maybe this Saturday, while someone is watering their plants, another person is taking care of a garden, a pet or anything else that depends a little on their attention. And perhaps we are all doing something similar: giving time to something that reminds us that life continues, even when we cannot immediately see its changes.
Tal vez este sábado, mientras alguien riega sus plantas, otra persona esté cuidando un jardín, una mascota o cualquier otra cosa que dependa un poco de su atención.
