Hello holos-lotus@holos-lotus community.

This is the tenth chapter of “Unlearning Out Loud”, a space where I question some ideas we have accepted for a long time without stopping to think about whether they still make sense to us.

A few days ago, some friends invited me to the beach. Since it is still quite hot, they wanted to take advantage of these days to enjoy the sea. I accepted the invitation, although I had some doubts from the beginning. They are the kind of people who like to arrive around noon and stay until it is almost dark. I know they enjoy it that way, but for me, spending so many hours at the beach is not always a good idea.

When the day came, I had already changed my mind about going. Still, I tried to find a way to make the outing work for everyone, so I asked them to please go early. My skin is very fair, and the Cuban sun can be quite strong. I cannot spend the same amount of time exposed to it as they can. They agreed, but in the end, getting everyone to agree on a time proved almost impossible.

By the time they arrived, I was already leaving. I apologized as best I could and went on my way. I did not want to spoil their day or make them feel bad about their plans. They could enjoy the beach as they liked, and I could decide that staying there until late was not what I wanted or needed that day.

There were other things to consider, too. Staying in the water until late is not without risks, and when the city is experiencing a power outage, getting home can become a problem because there may be no transport available. I did not feel comfortable spending the whole day worrying about the sun, the time, and how I would get back home. I preferred to leave before all those concerns became part of the outing.

For a long time, I thought that choosing myself meant disappointing someone else. I worried about how my decisions would look and whether people would think I was being difficult. Sometimes I said yes to plans even when I already knew they were not quite right for me. I wanted to share with others, but I also wanted to avoid having to explain why I needed something different.

I have learned that taking care of myself is my responsibility. If I do not look after my own well-being, I cannot expect other people to always notice what I need or make decisions for me. That does not mean my friends do not care about me. It simply means that they have their preferences and I have mine, and sometimes they do not match.

I do not think we have to put ourselves first in every situation, or that other people's feelings should never matter to us. But I am beginning to understand that caring about others does not mean ignoring what is good for me. I can love spending time with my friends and still decide to go home when a plan no longer feels right. I can apologize for changing a plan without feeling that I have done something wrong just because someone might be disappointed.

Maybe the hardest part is accepting that not everyone will understand our decisions, even when we have good reasons for making them. Sometimes we explain ourselves too much because we want others to approve of what we have decided. I still find that difficult, but I do not want to keep doing things just to avoid feeling guilty. My time, my health, and my peace of mind matter, too.

And you? When was the last time you chose yourself over other people's expectations, even though you felt a little guilty about it?
