Hello, GEMS friends.

Have you ever spent an afternoon with someone without talking much, and still felt that you were having a good time? It happens to me sometimes. We get together, each person starts doing something, and the hours pass without much conversation. Nobody seems worried about the silence, and there is no need to turn on the television or find a topic just to keep things going. I like that kind of company because I can relax without wondering whether I should be saying something.

I think we often feel responsible for keeping a conversation alive, especially when we are with people we do not know very well. If there is a pause, we start looking for something to say. We ask another question, comment on something nearby, or bring up a subject we have already talked about. I have done that myself. Sometimes the conversation flows naturally, but other times I get the feeling that we are both trying to prevent a few seconds of silence rather than actually enjoying our time together.

At home, I appreciate being able to share a room with someone without having to pay attention to the same thing. One person can be reading while the other looks at the news, folds some clothes, or simply rests for a while. Every now and then, one of us says something, the other answers, and then we go back to what we were doing. There is no awkwardness in that. We are together, but we do not have to entertain each other every minute.

For me, that kind of silence has a lot to do with trust. When I feel comfortable with someone, I do not worry so much about how I appear. I can be tired, have a lot on my mind, or simply not feel like talking. I do not need to pretend that I am in a cheerful mood, and I do not expect the other person to keep me entertained. We can share the same space and let each other be. Of course, this does not happen with everyone, and that is perfectly normal. Some people enjoy talking all the time, while others are more comfortable with quiet moments.

Still, I would not say that every silence is a good one. There are times when two people stop talking because something has hurt them or because they do not know how to bring up a difficult subject. I have felt that kind of silence, too. It is very different from sitting beside someone and feeling at ease. When something is wrong, talking may be exactly what we need. Being comfortable with silence does not mean ignoring what needs to be said.

I also think about the moments when I am alone. There are days when I enjoy having the radio on while I do things around the house, and others when I would rather leave everything quiet. I might sit by the window, look outside for a while, or keep my hands busy with some small task. I do not always need music or a program playing in the background. Sometimes I just want to hear the sounds of the house and let my thoughts wander without having to follow anything in particular.

Perhaps we do not give ourselves many chances to experience that kind of quiet. There is always something to watch, listen to, answer, or check on the phone. I enjoy those things, too, but I like knowing that I can put them aside when I want to. A quiet afternoon does not have to become a special occasion. It can simply be an ordinary part of the day.

I am glad when I find people with whom I can talk about all sorts of things and also sit quietly without feeling that something is missing. And I hope to keep getting better at enjoying my own company in the same way.

What about you? Do you feel comfortable sharing silence with someone, or do you prefer to have a conversation or some background noise? I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
