Hello @holos-lotus community.
Hola comunidad de
@holos-lotus.
This is the ninth chapter of “Unlearning Out Loud”, a space where I allow myself to question some ideas that we have accepted as truths for a long time. This time I want to talk about something that can seem positive at first: the need to always be improving, healing, learning, or becoming a better version of ourselves.
I like reading books about personal growth, and I have learned useful things from some of them. But there have been times when I finish one book and, instead of simply enjoying what I learned, I immediately start looking for the next one. It is almost as if I were afraid of stopping. As if there were always something else I needed to understand, change, or fix in myself.
Sometimes it feels like we have turned our own lives into a permanent project. We have to heal our past, improve our habits, work on our emotions, learn something new, be more productive, take better care of ourselves and, on top of everything, enjoy the process. It can become exhausting without us even noticing.
I have caught myself looking for things that need to be improved even on days when everything is fine. Instead of simply saying, “I am okay today,” I start thinking about what I could be doing better. It is as if being satisfied with myself were not enough and I always needed another goal to work toward.
And I wonder if we sometimes confuse growth with dissatisfaction. Learning and changing can be wonderful when they come from curiosity or from a genuine desire to do something differently. But it feels different when we are constantly looking at ourselves and thinking that something is missing.
There are days when I don't want to improve anything. I just want to have coffee, talk to someone I love, watch a movie, take a walk, or simply have a quiet day. And I am beginning to understand that those days are not wasted. They are also part of my life.
Maybe we don't always need another book, another course, another goal, or another thing to work on. Maybe sometimes we need to stop searching for the next thing to fix and recognize that there is nothing wrong with being who we are today.
This does not mean that I want to stop learning or changing. I still have things I want to do and many things I would like to improve. But I don't want my happiness to depend on becoming someone different first. I want to be able to look at myself today and say, “This is me, and for now, I am enough.”
Maybe the best version of ourselves is not always the one that knows more, does more, or has everything figured out. Maybe sometimes it is simply the version that can stop for a moment and enjoy the life she already has.
And you? Do you allow yourself to be happy with who you are today, or do you live waiting for your “best version”?
