Hello dear @holos-lotus community,
When I started “Unlearning Out Loud,” I wanted to create a space where I could question some of the ideas we have learned about how we are supposed to live, feel and grow.
In the first chapter, I questioned the idea that success has a correct age.
In the second, I talked about the pressure to always be busy.
Today I want to question something that can be even more difficult to recognize:
The idea that we should always be positive.
There are mornings when I wake up without much enthusiasm.
Nothing dramatic has happened. There is no particular reason I can point to. I simply don't feel like smiling, talking or pretending that everything is wonderful.
Sometimes I want to make my coffee, stay quiet and have some time alone.
And yet, even on those days, there can be a strange feeling that I should somehow fix myself.
Cheer up.
Think positive.
Look at the bright side.
Everything happens for a reason.
Smile.
As if being in a bad mood for a few hours were a problem that needed to be solved as quickly as possible.
Hola querida comunidad de
@holos-lotus:
I understand where the idea of positive thinking comes from.
There is something beautiful about trying to find hope when life becomes difficult. I don't want to lose that.
But I think there is a difference between choosing hope and being afraid of negative emotions.
Sometimes we turn positivity into another obligation.
We feel sad and immediately search for a reason why we should not be sad.
We feel tired and tell ourselves that other people have it worse.
We are disappointed and force ourselves to find the lesson.
We are frustrated and remind ourselves to be grateful.
And suddenly we are not only experiencing an emotion.
We are also judging ourselves for having it.
That can be exhausting.
I have been learning that not every bad day needs a lesson.
Sometimes a bad day is simply a bad day.
Maybe I didn't sleep well.
Maybe I am mentally tired.
Maybe something disappointed me.
Maybe I have been carrying too many things for too long.
Maybe I don't even know what is wrong.
And perhaps I don't need to know immediately.
There are days when the most honest thing I can say is:
“Today I don't feel very good, and I don't want to pretend that I do.”
That doesn't mean I am giving up.
It doesn't mean I am becoming negative.
It doesn't mean I will feel this way forever.
It simply means that, today, this is how I feel.
And I am beginning to believe that this deserves some space too.
Quizás no dormí bien.
Quizás estoy mentalmente cansada.
Quizás algo me decepcionó.
Quizás he estado cargando demasiadas cosas durante demasiado tiempo.
Quizás ni siquiera sé qué me pasa.
Y tal vez no necesito saberlo inmediatamente.
I think about how quickly we try to repair our emotions.
If we are sad, we look for a motivational video.
If we are anxious, we search for techniques.
If we are frustrated, we look for a quote.
If we feel lost, we immediately start making plans.
There is nothing wrong with any of these things.
They can help.
But sometimes there is another possibility:
Maybe we can simply sit with what we feel for a while.
Without fixing it.
Without explaining it.
Without turning it into something productive.
Maybe we can have a quiet coffee.
Take a shower.
Stay away from social media.
Cry if we need to.
Say no to a conversation.
Go to bed earlier.
Or simply spend an afternoon doing very little.
Not every difficult emotion needs an immediate solution.
Some feelings may just need to be acknowledged before they pass.
This is another belief I want to unlearn:
That being positive all the time is a sign of emotional strength.
Maybe strength can also mean allowing ourselves to admit that we are not okay.
Not making a performance out of our pain.
Not pretending.
Not forcing a smile because someone expects one.
There is a difference between staying trapped in sadness and giving sadness permission to exist.
I don't want to live permanently looking at the darkest side of everything.
But I also don't want to become someone who is afraid of having a difficult day.
Life contains both.
There are mornings when everything feels light.
And there are others when getting through the morning is enough.
Both are part of being human.
No fingir.
Maybe this is what unlearning looks like for me.
Not replacing negative thinking with permanent positivity.
Not pretending that every experience has a beautiful purpose.
Just allowing myself to experience a wider range of emotions without immediately labeling them as good or bad.
A bad day doesn't erase all the good days that came before it.
Being sad doesn't mean I am ungrateful.
Feeling tired doesn't mean I am weak.
Wanting to be alone doesn't mean I don't care about other people.
And having a day when I don't feel like smiling doesn't mean I have lost my ability to be happy.
Tomorrow may be different.
And if it isn't, I can deal with that tomorrow.
Today, perhaps I just need to breathe, make my coffee and let the day be what it is.
So I want to leave this third chapter with a question that I am also asking myself:
Do you allow yourself to be sad, or do you immediately try to “fix” your mood?
Do you give yourself permission to have a bad day without feeling that you are doing something wrong?
Do you allow silence, solitude or tears to exist without immediately searching for a lesson?
Maybe we don't always need to turn difficult emotions into something positive.
Maybe sometimes we simply need to let them pass through us.
And perhaps accepting that we are not okay today is not a failure of positive thinking.
Maybe it is simply another form of honesty.
