The wife and I went to a fairly new steakhouse type restaurant that opened called Miller & Carter. Our daughters have both been, so I thought it was about time we showed our faces. The premises has been through a few genres. It started as a pub called The Mill Farm, then morphed into a bar, come pizzeria and finally (Maybe?) into a slightly up-market steak house.
They pride themselves on 30 and 50-day aged steaks which takes up most of the menu as you would expect, although they do have a burger and a fish choice too. A nice bubbly young girl came to take our order. I went for the Rump Steak with Porcini mushroom & black garlic sauce: "Ooh, and I'll have the sweet potato fries, please." I said. "And what sauce would you like on your wedge?" the waitress said. Wedge? Wedge? What is she talking about? I'm having sweet potato fries? Now dear reader, my wife has little patience with me when we are ordering food; this is because, sadly, she just sees food as a necessary evil, so her orders are generally pretty straightforward. "Just choose a sauce to go on your wedges!" the wife ordered. Notice how I wrote 'wedges'? It would seem the wife and I were on the same wavelength. The waitress left after I plumbed for Honey & Bacon and I commenced trying to explain: "Bubb, I don't understand. I don't want wedges, I've ordered sweet potato fries!" the wife, clutching the sheet of the paper menu said: Look! You have to follow the four stages,
① Choose your steak.
② Choose your sauce.
③ Choose your wedge dressing
④ Choose an extra."
Muttering under my breath, I chose to surrender and wait for my plateful of potatoes that I gleefully waited for so that I could retort: See! I told you I didn't want wedges!".
A few minutes later, the waitress brought two wooden bowls with a quarter of a giant lettuce doused in bacon. I was just about to say: "Sorry, that's not ours?" when the waitress said: "Here are your wedges."
SO THAT'S THE WEDGES!
Couldn't the menu have said "Lettuce with dressing to clean the palate"? It would have saved me a lot of dagger looks from the wife! Although, to be fair, even she was like, "What's this?" The wife and I must be complete Philistine peasants when it comes to eating out? 🤣🤣🤣
