Przed przyjazdem do Rygi spotkałem kilka opinii w internecie, że jest to najbrzydsza stolica europejska. Wczoraj miałem okazję osobiście to zweryfikować. W mojej ocenie ta opinia jest bardzo krzywdząca, bo Ryga ma wiele do zaoferowania i całej naszej czwórce bardzo się podobała. Spędziliśmy cały dzień szwendając się głównie po starym mieście.
[ENG] Before coming to Riga, I came across several opinions on the internet that it is the ugliest European capital city. Yesterday I had the opportunity to verify this personally. In my opinion, this opinion is very unfair, because Riga has a lot to offer and all four of us liked it very much. We spent the whole day wandering mainly around the old town.
Zanim dotarliśmy na stare miasto to zahaczyliśmy o Rigas Centreltirgus (Targowisko Centralne), bazar na którym można kupić prawie wszystko. Ceny mimo tego, że w Euro o wiele razy niższe niż w Belgii.
[ENG] Before we got to the old town we hooked up with Rigas Centreltirgus (Central Market), a bazaar where you can buy almost anything. Prices, despite being in Euros, are many times lower than in Belgium.
Na starym mieście w pierwszej kolejności weszliśmy zwiedzić Melngalvju nams (Dom Bractwa Czarnogłowych) doskonale odrestaurowany budynek z 1334 roku, który uległ zniszczeniu w wyniku ostrzału wojsk niemieckich w 1941, a reszty dokonali Rosjanie w 1948 roku wysadzając pozostałości w powietrze. Teren został zasiany trawą i włączony do powiększonego placu ratuszowego. Dopiero po odzyskaniu niepodległości władze Łotwy zdecydowały się na odbudowanie historycznego budynku, prace zakończono w 1999 roku. Budynek prezentuje się okazale.
[ENG] In the old town, we first went in to visit Melngalvju nams (House of the Blackheaded Brotherhood) a perfectly restored building dating from 1334, which was destroyed by German army shelling in 1941 and the rest was done by the Russians in 1948 by blowing up the remains. The area was grassed over and incorporated into the enlarged town hall square. It was only after independence that the Latvian authorities decided to rebuild the historic building, and the work was completed in 1999. The building looks magnificent.
Na starówce to nie jedyny odrestaurowany budynek, miejscy planiści doskonale się spisali, widać troskę o zachowanie dawnego charakteru starego miasta. Ze świecą można szukać szkaradnych nowoczesnych budynków, które nie pasują do otoczenia.
[ENG] It is not the only restored building in the old town, the city planners have done an excellent job and care is evident in the preservation of the old character of the old town. It is hard to find ugly modern buildings that do not fit in with their surroundings.
W przyszłości popełnię dłuższy, bardziej wyczerpujący post o Rydze, bo miasto jest tego warte.
[ENG] In the future I will commit a longer, more comprehensive post about Riga, because the city is worth it.
