Wczoraj czułem się już lepiej. Słońce zdradziecko zachęcało do spacerów. Mimo tego, że jestem daleko od Polski to w dzień Wszystkich Świętych wspominam bliskich, którzy odeszli. W miejsce bezpośrednich odwiedzin na grobach bliskich zwykle odwiedzam w ten dzień cmentarze w okolicy. Z racji tego, że wciąż zwalczam choróbsko to wczoraj po raz kolejny wybrałem się na cmentarz komunalny w Mons, który znajduje się niespełna kilometr od mojego mieszkania.
[ENG] I felt better yesterday. The sun was treacherously encouraging for walks. Even though I am far away from Poland, on All Saints' Day I remember my loved ones who have passed away. Instead of visiting the graves of my loved ones directly, I usually visit local cemeteries on this day. Because I'm still fighting off an illness, yesterday I went once again to the municipal cemetery in Mons, which is less than a kilometre from my flat.
Ponieważ ten cmentarz jest blisko, to często tam zaglądam i za każdym razem coś ciekawego odkrywam, podobnie było tym razem. Na początku jednak warto wspomnieć, że mimo tego, że 1-szy listopada jest również w Belgii dniem wolnym z racji Wszystkich Świętych, to nie ma tu zakorzenionej tak jak w Polsce tradycji odwiedzania grobów bliskich. Z przysłowiową świeczką trzeba też szukać zniczy (w sklepach i na pomnikach), najczęstszą formą pamięci są chryzantemy, jak widać na poniższym zdjęciu stawiane są bez ładu i składu.
[ENG] Since this cemetery is so close, I often visit it and every time I discover something interesting, and the same happened this time. In the beginning, however, it is worth mentioning that despite the fact that the 1st of November is also a holiday in Belgium due to All Saints Day, the tradition of visiting the graves of loved ones is not as deeply rooted here as it is in Poland. With the proverbial candle, you also have to look for candles (in shops and on monuments), the most common form of remembrance are chrysanthemums, as you can see in the picture below, placed without any order or composition.
Zdecydowana większość nagrobków w starszej części cmentarza jest opuszczona, te które są pod opieką związku weteranów są zadbane, ale takich pomników jest niewiele. Większość jest zaniedbana, na tym obrośniętym mchem nagrobku trudno odczytać kto został tam pochowany, ale takie podobają mi się najbardziej. Jak magnes przyciągają mnie też nagrobki ze starymi fotografiami, to jest piękne.
[ENG] The vast majority of gravestones in the older part of the cemetery are derelict, those in the care of the veterans association are well cared for, but there are few such monuments. Most are neglected, it is difficult to read who is buried there on this moss-covered gravestone, but I like them best. I am also drawn like a magnet to gravestones with old photographs, it is beautiful.
Poniżej nagrobek Jean-Baptiste Thorn, jednego z budowniczych państwa belgijskiego. "Popierając rewolucję belgijską, został wybrany do Kongresu Narodowego (1830) i został pierwszym gubernatorem prowincji Luksemburg w niepodległej Belgii (1830-1834), a następnie drugim gubernatorem prowincji Hainaut w niepodległej Belgii (1834-1841). Jako gubernator Hainaut uczestniczył w tworzeniu Szkoły Górniczej w Mons." Zwróciłem uwagę na to, że popiersie na cokole zwrócone jest tyłem do alejki przy której stoi nagrobek, twarz skierowana jest w stronę miasta Mons.
[ENG] Below is the tombstone of Jean-Baptiste Thorn, one of the builders of the Belgian state. "Supporting the Belgian Revolution, he was elected to the National Congress (1830) and became the first governor of the province of Luxembourg in independent Belgium (1830-1834) and then the second governor of the province of Hainaut in independent Belgium (1834-1841). As governor of Hainaut, he participated in the establishment of the School of Mines in Mons." I noted that the bust on the pedestal faces the back of the alley where the tombstone stands, the face facing the city of Mons.
Wielokrotnie widziałem kondukty żałobne jadące w stronę cmentarza, albo do krematorium, które znajduje się obok. Myślałem, że większość zmarłych jest spopielana, ale dziś trafiłem na miejsce ze świeżymi grobami, wszystkie z tego roku. Niczym szczególnym się nie wyróżniają, niewielki kopczyk i krzyż ze sklejki na którym jest tabliczka z nazwiskiem i datą śmierci, tylko przy jednym z tych grobów były kwiaty. Smutne to. Poniżej jeszcze więcej starych fotografii, często pojawiają się fotografie zmarłych w mundurach, nie oznacza to, że dana osoba zginęła na wojnie.
[ENG] Many times I have seen funeral processions going towards the cemetery, or to the crematorium next door. I thought that most of the dead were incinerated, but today I came across a place with fresh graves, all from this year. They don't stand out in any particular way, a small mound and a plywood cross on which is a plaque with the name and date of death, only at one of the graves were flowers. It is sad. Here are some more old photographs, there are often photographs of the dead in uniform, this does not mean that the person died in the war.
Drugą stronę wzniesienia na którym znajduje się cmentarza zajmuje cmentarz weteranów wojskowych. Mimo tego, że w trakcie pierwszej i drugiej wojny światowej w okolicach Mons miały miejsce starcia wojsk aliantów z armią Niemiecką, to nie są to groby poległych żołnierzy. Zaledwie na kilka nagrobkach jest data śmierci 1914, zdecydowana większość pochowanych tam weteranów zmarła długo po wojnie, zauważyłem dwa nagrobki z 2020.
[ENG] The other side of the hill on which the cemetery is located is occupied by a cemetery of military veterans. Despite the fact that clashes between the Allied and German armies took place near Mons during the First and Second World Wars, these are not the graves of fallen soldiers. Only a few of the headstones have the date of death in 1914, the vast majority of the veterans buried there died long after the war, I noticed two headstones from 2020.
Na koniec dwa nowsze nagrobki, ale jakże różne od innych, dowodzą, że nie jest to cmentarz zastrzeżony dla jednej religii.
[ENG] Finally, two more recent gravestones, but how different from the others, prove that this is not a cemetery reserved for one religion.
