Not as Easy as It Looked

When I try to think back to the base of my heaped and tired memories, there's always that one memory that stops me and makes me smile. I remember when I started living alone in that small apartment where everything—the kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom—was close together. Then I remember the challenges I had to overcome, since living alone for the first time is an extremely transformative experience.

My first big challenge was making rice. Yes, as you read, making rice was a huge challenge for me, and it was something I undoubtedly thought would be the simplest thing to do, especially because I had seen the process in detail a thousand times: water, salt, oil, rice, waiting, and eating. How difficult was it? What could go wrong? A sneak peek: anything can go wrong, and above all, it's not as easy as it seemed, at least not for someone new to the world of culinary adventures.

It was a Sunday morning, and I'd been living off nothing but pizza and burgers for weeks. My stomach was hurting, and my body was already craving a real meal. I figured there was no better way to get started in the culinary arts than with simple, delicious rice. So I started preparing it, saying out loud:
"It's just rice, it'll only take a few minutes."

I put the pot on the stove, and without measuring, I poured in about 5 tablespoons of oil, maybe? I don't remember exactly. I then poured the entire package of rice into the pot. In my mind, the rice grains wouldn't grow, and the package looked exactly like the one it would have cooked, which was very naive on my part. When the rice came into contact with the oil, it started to make a strange noise.
"Of course, I have to put the water in first!" I shouted, and the scream echoed in every corner of my small new home.

"But how much water do I have to add?" I asked myself.

I searched desperately behind the package of rice and saw that the measurement said cups, but I didn't know what that was or how much one of those cups was, and I had several types of cups in my kitchen.

"Well, I think the important thing is that it covers the rice?"

And so I did. I filled the pot to the brim with water. After a while, I remembered I had forgotten the salt, and foolishly I thought:

"Two tablespoons better, I like it salty."

While my delicious rice was cooking, I started watching a movie, and sleepiness, tiredness, and the exhaustion of the day hit me in the face, and I fell completely asleep in front of the television. I woke up to a burning smell, and it took me a few seconds to realize where it was coming from: it was my rice; I had completely forgotten about it.

"Oh no!" "My rice!" I shouted as I peered into the pot.
That day I realized that something can be wet and burnt at the same time, and that two tablespoons is a lot of salt. Since that day, every time I make rice, I watch it as if it were a friendly accomplice ready to play a nasty trick on you at any moment. But I now know how to measure the water, how to know when it's boiling, and when to turn off the heat. Yes, there are times when it burns again, but it doesn't frustrate me. I know it's one of those things that seems easy but isn't entirely. Simple doesn't always have to be easy, and the important thing is to have the patience to learn and not be afraid to make mistakes.

No recuerdo bien.

-¡Ay no!
