ÂżNo puedes escribir, no puedes?
Rompe esa hoja, quema tus libros,

No juegues a sentir,
no juegues a escribir.

Between who we want to be and who we are: a tally of failures

Here you are again, blank page,
here you are again, furtive emotions,
here you are again, lost hope
and who am I, and where am I?

The old poems make my nose sting;
who could write something so bad and be happy?
Happy? Do you want to be happy?
The old poems are laughing at you.

Can’t you write? You can’t?
Tear up that page, burn your books,
leave it all behind;
you’ll be happier playing at being normal.

It’s not your time, it’s not your place,
not yesterday, not today, nor in some distant "maybe."
Don’t play at feeling,
don’t play at writing.

The old poems are laughing at you now.

(original poem)

Good day, anonymous readers. I am taking advantage of the afternoon heat to sit down and write a new reflection, to release fragments of ideas from my soul and leave them here like a letter without a recipient, ready to be read by anyone whom chance or luck brings to this corner. It has been a while, longer than I would like, since my last post in this community. Although I haven't stopped writing, in fact, I’m doing it much more frequently than before, the days have slipped by amidst stories and poems, leaving no time for writing born of contemplation and the search for healing.

Today, I want to find catharsis through a feeling we have all experienced at some point: that sensation of never quite reaching our true potential, of never becoming who we want to be. It is no coincidence that I began by sharing an old poem I wrote years ago, one I wasn't at all satisfied with back then, though revisiting it today, I find it more pleasing. It is a poem precisely about that: about creating and experiencing failure. A poem dedicated to the "bad" poems, the ones I didn't love at first, the ones that came and went without fanfare.

How often do we give up because we don't get the results we want? This applies to any aspect of life: work, romance, or family. We often view giving up as the only option, the most viable one, when in truth, it should be the last resort. Giving up means ceasing to try, it is simply throwing in the towel and waiting for life to pass us by. The problem with giving up is that, in doing so, you say goodbye to what could have been. Yet, experience teaches us that there is far more satisfaction in the journey than in the destination. When you give up, when you quit because you believe you won't succeed, you miss out on the wonders of the attempt itself.

Here is a small example: suppose you want to write a novel, a major one, but between your obligations and your daily life, you barely have any time. Every time you return to writing, you’ve forgotten what came before. You become frustrated; you feel you won't get what you want or manage to write the novel, so you give up writing altogether. Perhaps you stop writing that novel today because you will never finish it, and give up writing altogether, when in truth, you weren't meant for a novel, but rather for a hundred good short stories.

That is why failures must be approached with a cool head; one should never make decisions during moments of heightened emotional euphoria. Failures are harsh, they remind us that we are not yet who we want to be, but it is a mistake to view failure as a signal to give up or stop completely. Failure should be taken seriously, yet not as a dividing line between what we can and cannot do. So, do not fear it; learn from it, learn to pick yourself up, and find catharsis in the experience, not to transform the experience itself, but to transform yourself.

Perhaps failure is simply an indicator that we need to slow down, rethink our paradigms, recognize our limits, and find better ways to focus our efforts, or at least, that is how I like to see it.
