Fell Dragon Part 9

Greetings Fan!
I hope the start of your week is treating you well! Mine is just annoying at the moment with troublesome work. I think everyone is just irritated because they want their projects to start and finish as quickly as possible. Shouldn't complain too loudly, as I at least get to do what I love!

Anyway, back to Fell Dragon. The last time we saw Saita, she had become a chew toy to Toma and his pack. Left seriously injured, no one is aware of her odd ability to metabolise pain medications the way that she does. Is this something she can overcome? Guess you'll have to read to find out more!

Bolx knew exactly where Saita was. He could hear her screaming from down the hall. He shifted the bag on his shoulder uncomfortably, wondering how she would react to seeing him. He had butterflies in his stomach and found he was sweating. He chided himself for being a child and marched forward to the medical bay. As he could have guessed, the room was a mess with doctors trying to restrain the fighting Saita. Blood flecked every surface.

“You have a broken collar bone, how the hell are you screaming like this?” demanded the doctor. “Why are the pain meds not working on you?”

Then the doctor noticed Bolx and came to shoo him away. “Can’t you see that I have a patient?”

“She is feeling everything you are trying to do. She is human…”

“I know, I am using human medication. Do you think I am an idiot?”

“She is unique. Her liver is able to metabolize most medicines far quicker than normal. Try these.” he handed the bag to the doctor.

“Do you think I will just use anything on my patient?”

Saita’s screams grated on their ears and Bolx simply said. “Open the bag, look inside and read the letter for yourself.”

The doctor grumbled and dug around in the bag until he found the letter. He shook it open and started reading it. “Blood type correct, markers for...correct, genetic anomaly...yes. The Queen signed this?”

He viewed Bolx sternly and the Saith said. “She was a fighter for the humans. The Queen was a caregiver due to her unique circumstances. Can you please do something about the screaming now?”

“You need to leave; I am going to have to place at least two plates to fix this.”

Bolx nodded his head and removed himself from the room. He, however, stood at the door and watched the doctor show Saita the note. The woman was drenched in blood from the cuts across her face and it was pinched in pain. She seemed confused at first but then looked at him and started laughing. He didn’t know what sounded worse. Her screams or her laugh. She eventually nodded her head and allowed the doctors to use the medicine brought for her.

“You know your daughter too well, Myla.” muttered Bolx as he stepped away.

Bruno sighed heavily as he read the damage report of the seven fighters. Of the six dogs only three were slightly injured while the last three had a mixture of concussions, broken limbs, and internal injuries. Saita was left with four deep lacerations that ran deep across the right side of her face that turned to only scratches on the opposite side of her face. That was an injury easily dealt with. The shattered collarbone was another story. That took the doctors hours to fix in surgery, once she was unconscious. Two plates and several screws were now holding her collarbone in place. She was still unconscious, three days after the fight while the dogs were slinking around feeling very sorry for themselves and being laughed at by all the other fighters.

Bruno looked up from the report to see the Saith sitting at the human’s bedside looking exhausted. He had brought the medicine that had made it easier to treat Saita. She had never been this badly injured before and thus had never needed medical intervention. Bruno had had no idea she would be resistant to any of the medications available to them. She had never said a word. Had Bolx not come she would likely have died, and Bruno had suspected that was what she had wanted all along. Her room had been packed up when he went to it earlier in the day. As if the occupant was planning to move out or to make collection of their things easier for the one who had to clean up after a death.

“This is not good.” he muttered under his breath.

Bolx didn’t look up but said. “Her first attempt, right?”

“You suspected that she would attempt to kill herself?”

“She would never kill herself outright but throwing herself into battle as she had, that pretty much does sound like her.” tentatively he lay a hand on her shoulder. “I know a year has passed but you are not alone. If you plan on leaving this world, at least make an effort to tell your son.”

She groaned and he chuckled. “Oh, course I know you can hear me.”

He got to his feet and stretched. “I have a sponsor for her. Your Dreg King just needs to fill in the entry forms with the results of this fight. Entities for externals open in the next two weeks.”

“Will you not wait till she wakes? You are after all friends?”

“She doesn’t see me as a friend and no. She won’t wake while there are people here. Her marks are uncovered, and she is ashamed of them. You want her to fight for consciousness, leave the room for a few hours and make sure that she has a long shirt to change into. Give her a day or so to rest and regain the blood she has lost.”

“Normally these kinds of wounds end a fighter’s career.”

“You didn’t see the scar on her chest? She got impaled. She’ll be fine. Sore but fine.” Bolx patted her leg and said to her. “I’ll be on the planet if you want to speak.”

Then he turned to Bruno. “The fight was a good one. She fought with her full heart. She will not let you down so go easy on her about her room.”

Bruno nodded his head and got to his feet. “I will see you out. I have things to do. I’ll have clothes delivered to her but for now I will let her rest.”

If Saita had been shocked to receive medicine from Myla, she never showed it. Even after the doctor showed her the letter the Queen had sent. It had been cold, clinical, stating only what it had to and no more. Saita had allowed the doctor to keep what was left of medication, so that he could test and reverse engineer it for later use later. She kept the pain pills for herself as she needed it. Every part of her hurt after that fight and she had her right arm in a sling with strict instructions to keep it bound unless she was bathing or sleeping. After being cleared by the doctor she had limped off to her room and was mildly shocked to see that everything she had packed up was neatly placed back where it had been once before. She blushed. This had to be Bruno and he must have known why she had done it.

She flopped onto her bed with a groan before pulling the two bottles from inside the sling. One said ‘sleep’ while the other said ‘pain,’ and she really needed to sleep now. She was exhausted and just lying on the bed as she was now her eyes were already closing. She forced herself to sit up and get some water to drink with the pills. She was about to take them when there was a loud knock at her door.

“It’s open Bruno.” she mumbled as she swallowed the pills with some water.

The Behemoth entered the room and Saita was somewhat bemused that both faces had a look of worry. She waved it away and lay down on her bed while putting a pillow under her right elbow to support it.

“You look sick.”

“It’s blood loss, I will be fine in a few days. Is this going to be long? I really could need a nap.”

Bruno pointed to several things in the room and said. “They stay like this from now on. Do you understand?”

“Hmm.”

“Not ‘hmm,’ a yes or no.”

“Yeah.” she said.

“Your friend left you a message.” he tapped the letter on the table.

“My friend? I don’t have any friends.”

“The one with the tail.”

“The last time I checked every single one of Toma’s pack members were avoiding me like the plague.” she sat up with a grimace. “God this hurts.”

“You should have stayed in the medical wing another week, but you were too insistent on leaving.” Bruno listed the letter from the table and brought it to her. “The other friend of yours.”

“You mean Bolx?” she rubbed at her head. “That is right, he was there. Someone had to bring the medicine.”

She took the letter and Bruno moved away saying. “I will have food brought to you in a few minutes. Try to remain awake until then. If you manage to choke anything down, then I insist on you resting for a few hours.”

Saita nodded her head, not really in the mood to read the letter but also quite curious. She waited until Bruno had left the room before she flicked the letter open with her left hand and looked at the neat handwriting. She quickly scanned it several times before setting it on her desk. She then got to her feet and went to the window to look out of it.

I am sorry I got you into this. I will make it up to you. I will remain on the planet if you want to talk. If not, then just tell the Behemoth that and I will leave. I know you have no reason to believe me or trust me, but I must speak to you about what is happening to you. If you cannot speak to me directly, I will leave an address that you can write to. Bolx.

He had painstakingly written this letter by hand. It was neat to the point that Saita thought that he had written this letter several times before leaving this copy. She was torn. He had been the one to get her into this mess, but he was also the only one she still had a link to. A link that she first had thought not necessary but now she wasn’t so sure.

Painful tingly behind her eyes alerted her to the emotions trying to get in the way and she pressed them down as far as what they would go. If she broke down now that would be it, there would be no coming back from that. She set her forehead to the glass and sighed at the coldness of it despite the light pouring in from outside.

She was still running a low-grade fever and that is why she had left the medical wing; she had not wanted to catch something while her body was trying to heal. She looked to her left arm. When a nurse had helped her to get dressed, she saw that the marks had retreated all the way to her elbow. A year’s worth of growth had been combated by a single fight. The fight had been tough. She remembered most of it. She remembered up to Toma latching onto her shoulder and after that not very much remained in her memory. Had he managed to grip her throat instead of where he had this would have been over.

She turned as Bruno brought a plate of food into her room. He pointed to it then her before he left the room; remembering to lock the door from the inside as he did. She had been tired before the fight and now the exhaustion lay heavy on her shoulders. She sat on the bed for some time before her eyes grew heavy and sleep called to her. She didn’t want to sleep but she knew it was the only way she could escape the pain, if only for a few hours. Laying herself in the middle of the bed she positioned the pillow under her right elbow again and closed her eyes.

The letter from her mother had not once mentioned her but rather spoke directly to the doctor. It only cemented the fact that the Queen truly felt no connection to her. Saita swallowed hard to prevent the tears. She now knew how Aidan had felt when he had seen her the first time. She hated being alone. She reached for the extra pillow she stashed under her bed and hugged to her chest. She missed them. She would have likely cried herself to sleep if the sleeping pills didn’t beat her to it.

What other secrets from the future does Baks hold, and does Saita have the strength to hear them. Who knows, guess you'll have to continue reading later in the week to find out!
