Hi there readers
Another short update from Silens and the King's perspective. Enjoy!
His eyes snapped forward. Silens led them to the back room where she kept detailed notes and sketches of plants she needed. She pulled a book from the shelf over a fire and laid it on a table close by.
“I need something for deep, dreamless sleep. Once I have cleaned the leg, it will need to be reset, and it will be agony. I would prefer her to be asleep and relaxed.”
“With a wound like that, wouldn’t it be better to take the leg?” asked Venator.
The question was one that Silens had already pondered and agonised over. True, the healing process would be better, especially with the fever and delirium. However, she had seen what losing a leg had done to Saita, and she couldn’t bear to see it repeated in Kay. Fell Dragon or not. No one deserved to suffer the loss of a limb because it was the easier option.
“If I take the leg, she will no longer be able to hunt and collect what’s needed. As a shaman, it will be nearly impossible without an apprentice. No, I cannot take away what she has become.” Silens took a deep breath. “While there are other options, the leg stays. The decay eaters are doing a good enough job working through the diseased flesh. If I can stop the spread of infection, then we have a chance. I will know within a day or so. For now, I need to manage her pain and get her to drink something.”
She paged a few pages and pointed out a mushroom. One was black with purple rings descending from its cap.
“This one will let her sleep when the pain is too much. It grows in caves to the north of here. Be careful; the spores are toxic if breathed in, and wear gloves. I’ll give you bags to collect it in. I will need at least five.”
She made sure the two men memorised what the mushroom looked like, then paged to a fresh page.
“The next plant is rarer, and I have only found young bushes. I need a mature bush with a stem that is at least as thick as my wrist. The leaves will be a dull blue if the age is right. Again, don’t collect with your bare hands. I will need about ten leaves.”
“And what is this for?” asked the King.
“Delirium brought on by pain. Her screams are because she sees things that aren’t there. The leaves should ease that, at least for a few hours.”
“Then why only a few?”
“Because the leaves lose their potency soon after picking them.” Silens was paging the book once more. “Then I will need this.”
Venator twisted his face in confusion when he saw the vine-like plant. “I am not sure that plant is found this far south.”
“Therein lies the problem. The infection is deep in her bones now. I can hold it off for a few days at most. Unless I can get this plant never mind removing the leg- she won’t live.” She looked at the king. “Do you have a runner in your party?”
“I’m a runner.” Said Venator.
“I need you here. You recognised all the plants, so you need to hunt them.” Silens turned to the king once more. “Do you have a runner?”
“I can handle that.”
“Your Majesty!” snapped Venator.
“I have a son. My line will continue. I am sure it will.” He fixed the shaman with a look and nodded his head. “I’ll take one huntsman with me but will leave the rest here to help you with gathering supplies you may need. I only ask for one thing.”
“Oh?”
“Put a good word in with the villagers. My men had nothing to do with the attack on your assistant. They shouldn’t be harassed because of what I did.”
